📢TURKEY'S TARGETING OF CHILDREN UNDER THE GUISE OF THE FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM WAS RAISED AT OSCE. ▶️Our representative Coşkun Yorulmaz spoke on behalf of Solidarity With OTHERS at the Human Dimension Conference 2024, which is organized every year by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and attended by high-level bureaucrats from member states. ▶️In the speech, the unjust detentions of thousands of people and the case including 15 children, which was held on September 23-27, were mentioned. International organizations and human rights defenders were requested to follow the hearings in December. OSCE OSCE/ODIHR "According to the Turkish government figures, as of July of this year, over seven hundred thousand individuals have been investigated under the country’s anti-terrorism legislation. More than three hundred thousand people have been taken into police custody and at least a hundred thousand people have been imprisoned. On the other hand, between 2015 and 2021, more than fifteen thousand children under the age of 18 have been prosecuted for terrorism-related offences. Mass arrests still continue. On May the fourteenth earlier this year, more than five hundred people were arrested in a single day as part of a nationwide police operation. The extent of Turkiye’s abuse of its anti-terror laws continues to draw criticism from international human rights bodies. The UN's Working Group on Arbitrary Detention expressed deep concern that the widespread and systematic targeting of individuals for their alleged links to the Gülen Movement could amount to crime against humanity. The European Court of Human Rights has, on the other hand, consistently found that Turkiye's application of its anti-terror laws was overly broad and allowed arbitrary prosecution of individuals without evidence which linked them to any armed conduct. We as human rights lawyers unfortunately observe an emerging trend in Turkiye where children of people who have previously been prosecuted under anti-terror laws are also being targeted. In May earlier this year, the Istanbul Police in separate operations arrested forty individuals including fifteen minors, aged between thirteen and seventeen for being members of an armed terrorist organisation. The children later complained about being interrogated in the absence of their lawyers or a psychologist, being constantly threatened and verbally abused during interrogations, being denied food although they were kept in police custody for nearly 24 hours. They also noted that they were pressured to testify against their own parents. Their case was heard by an assize court in Istanbul last week. The evidence against the children include nothing but social conduct such as meeting in each others’ homes to study together, going to shopping malls together and strangely enough playing bowling together. All of these innocent social conduct were recorded by police surveillance teams and presented to the court as recruitment activity. The next court hearing of the children will be held in Istanbul in December in a couple of months. The Turkish authorities should perhaps take it as an opportunity to show to the international organisations to which it is a member and of course to the world at large that the rule of law still prevails within its borders. On the other hand, we urge OSCE and its member states to monitor the said proceedings closely. We also ask our fellow human rights defenders to offer their support to the defendants and their lawyers. I thank you."

The discussion was part of other commission members' attempts to pass a "definition" of antisemitism that doesn't define antisemitism at all. It instead asserts "the equation of antisemitism with anti-Zionism...has been instrumentalized as a pretense for attacks on the First Amendment rights of free speech." A definition that focuses more on telling Jews that our attempts to stay alive are harming other people's free speech isn't really about protecting Jews. And the reaction even to that was to say Jews are overreacting.

Incredible to see such crowds and a great display of courage in Letterkenny, County Donegal. These crowds stand as a symbol against the attempts of Donegal County Councillors to intimidate the people of Donegal from attending the protest by their smear campaign. They claimed that there was "no place for hate" in Donegal in an effort to stop people from attending the protest. The only "hate" that exists in Donegal comes from these so-called "public representatives" against the native electorate. Their attempts to smear the good people of Donegal failed miserably. The people of Donegal stand proud and strong against the corrupt political establishment and their destruction of our country. AB 1803 would force employers with 5+ employees to implement “anti-hate speech” training. But “hate speech” has no clear legal definition, and the Supreme Court has made clear it is not an exception to the First Amendment. So what counts as “hate” will be decided by shifting cultural & political standards. And we already know how that plays out. I have personally been compared to a Nazi, called hateful, transphobic, and harmful, by sitting members of this Legislature, simply for expressing common-sense views and my religious beliefs. So is that hateful?

Keeping these issues in mind, I believe there should be a National Commission for Men. I have introduced a Private Member's Bill in Parliament to establish such a commission so that men facing these challenges also have an institutional mechanism to seek justice and resolution of their grievances."

Take, for example, the recent case in Pune, where a man allegedly died after being pushed by his fiancée. In Agra, a man was allegedly drugged with sleeping pills, murdered, buried on the property, and tiles were laid over the spot...There are many such incidents emerging from different parts of the country. These cases show that men, too, can be victims of harassment and abuse, and in many instances, they suffer severe mental trauma. Keeping these issues in mind, I believe there should be a National Commission for Men. I have introduced a Private Member's Bill in Parliament to establish such a commission so that men facing these challenges also have an institutional mechanism to seek justice and resolution of their grievances."

The Free Speech Union has always been clear that the right to free speech does not include the right to break the law in an attempt to silence others or deprive them of their freedom of speech through fear and intimidation. Tonight in the House of Lords, FSU General Secretary Lord Young of Acton spoke in favour of Amendment 370A to the Crime and Policing Bill. Last Monday, the Free Speech Union was the victim of a malicious attack by a militant pro-trans ‘direct action’ group that encourages its supporters to steal hammers and take action against Members of Parliament. This is the same group that graffitied the Health Secretary’s constituency office — painting “child killer” on his window — vandalised the offices of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), and disrupted a women’s conference in Brighton. The group sought to silence us for defending the right of citizens — whom they disagree with — to express their views freely. Everyone has the right to disagree. Healthy, robust debate strengthens our policymaking and society. But groups that engage in criminal activity — including advocating violence — restrict the liberties of others. This is wrong. The amendment would create a new category of “Extreme Criminal Protest Groups” (ECPGs), targeting organisations that deliberately break the law to influence public policy or intimidate those defending our fundamental rights. Portuguese police violently attacked anti-fascist protesters yesterday. The neo-Nazi group 1143 had organized a demonstration in front of the Monument of the Discoveries in Lisbon, Portugal. The monument was designed by the fascist leader, Salazar, and glorifies Portuguese colonialism. A counter-protest was organized to oppose the fascist event. Organizers called it a "Day of Anti-Racist Struggle" and commemorated Alcindo Monteiro, a Cape-Verdean man who was murdered by neo-Nazis in Lisbon on June 10, 1995. Among his attackers was Mário Machado, the same neo-Nazi who can be seen in the video physically threatening an anti-fascist protester. At the protest, the police not only allowed the neo-Nazis to act with impunity, performing Nazi salutes and threatening anti-fascist counter-protesters; they themselves attacked the counter-protestors opposing these expressions of fascism.

The Chief Rabbi of Ukraine has come out in defense of neo-Nazis who were making Nazi salutes in central Kyiv. The thing is, it was Korchynskyi’s Brotherhood. I know members of Korchynskyi’s Brotherhood. They are marginals and the lowest of the low, some of whom consider themselves Aryans, hate Jews, hate Roma, and hate everyone. At the same time, Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi has defended neo-Nazis more than once. I think Korchynskyi’s numerous statements- that Jews were responsible for the Holocaust, that Ukrainians have no need to apologize for Babyn Yar, and that Jews are, by definition, stupid-would be of great interest to millions of Jews. And if you had sent such a Chief Rabbi of Ukraine to Kyiv in, say, 1942, he would probably have claimed that Babyn Yar had been invented by the communists. I think Israel should finally do something about this most vivid representative of the “I see nothing, I hear nothing, it’s all not so clear-cut, there are no Nazis in Ukraine” mindset. The situation is becoming far too disgraceful.
