President Zelenskyy: Ukraine did not choose this war and it's wrong to assume that this is a permanent arrangement that others can stay safe behind Ukraine forever. Ukrainians are people, not terminators. That is why we are doing everything to stop this war and to guarantee security. But the problem is this. Putin is no longer interested in anything else. Putin does not live like ordinary people. He doesn't walk the streets. You will not see him in a cafe. Putin consults more with Tsar Peter and Empress Catherine about territorial gains than with any living person about real, real life. Can you imagine Putin without war? Be honest. Right now his focus is on Ukraine and no one in Ukraine believes he will ever let our people go. But he will not let other European nations go either because he cannot let go of the very idea of war. He may see himself as a Tsar but in reality he is a slave to war.

It’s an extraordinarily insightful film that shows exactly how dictatorships sink their claws into institutions and use them to shape everyday life under their rule. It exposes the true depth and reach of Putin’s propaganda in Russian society. Countering propaganda is one of the most important parts of our work, and few films have done more in this fight than 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin.' Putin’s propaganda is a weapon, perhaps even more dangerous than nuclear arms. It is the fuel driving the war against Ukraine. This is a phenomenal achievement by Pavel Talankin, David Borenstein, and everyone else involved. I’m proud that one of my foundations supported the film's impact campaign and its awards and festival promotion, helping it reach the widest possible audience. Mr. Nobody Against Putin is one of the most important anti-war statements of our time. The Oscar and the BAFTA were both richly deserved.

Ukrainian diplomats and the Ukrainian Canadian Community have expressed really grave concerns about that film and I do want to say I share those concerns. We have to be really clear that this is a war where there is no moral equivalency this is a war of Russian aggression this is a war where Russia is breaking international law and committing war crimes. There is very clearly good and evil in this war. Ukrainians are fighting for their sovereignty and for democracy around the world and we as a country have to be very, very clear that there can be no moral equivalency in our understanding of this conflict. It's not right for Canadian public money to be supporting the screening and production of a film like this.”

As an American in Russia, I thought I would receive some negative reactions, but it has been the opposite. In fact, one of the main differences between Russians and Americans is how they treat foreigners from so called “unfriendly countries.” An Iranian in the USA won’t get the same treatment as an Italian. But in Russia, nobody cares. They care about who you are as a person, not where you come from. I have heard many Americans say how shocked they are with Russia’s friendliness, even with all the sanctions the U.S. has imposed. So Americans, Europeans, Africans, and whoever else, come visit Russia! You’ll be welcomed with open arms. #sashaganda

At the same time, many Russian opposition figures often seem unwilling to go all the way in articulating basic truths. The documentary Pavel Talankin filmed is about Russia’s propaganda used to fuel its war in Ukraine, yet in his speech he never mentioned who the aggressor is or which country is under attack. The speech was very vague—about wars in general, but no war in particular. This stance removes responsibility from Russia, Putin, the Kremlin, and ordinary Russians who carry out these orders—people who are actively killing Ukrainians, torturing, raping, and kidnapping children. He acknowledged that something was wrong, but he still seemed incapable of explaining what, why—and who is responsible. We don’t know if Pavel will ever understand this simple truth, but it’s important to explain how Ukrainians are feeling about it.
