FIRESTONE: HOW U.S. RUBBER GIANT STILL BURNS LIBERIA African Stream officially closed down at the end of July. But before making that decision, we had already been working on this important documentary about the American rubber company Firestone and its history of exploitation. In 1926, Firestone signed a deal with Liberia’s government to lease 1 million acres of land, 10% of the entire country, for just six cents an acre. Backed by the U.S. government and designed to secure a steady rubber supply for American industry, the deal marked the start of a deeply exploitative relationship. For decades, Liberian workers, many of them children, were forced to tap between 500 and 750 rubber trees a day in gruelling conditions. Some earned as little as 24 cents for a full day’s work. While Firestone grew into one of the world’s largest rubber producers, Liberia was left with environmental destruction, impoverished communities, and virtually no national development from the wealth extracted. After Liberia’s brutal civil war, a new agreement was signed in 2005. But critics argue the terms still overwhelmingly favoured Firestone. The company continues to control vast plantations, while surrounding communities remain locked in poverty. When we visited Barclay Farm, a village next to the Firestone rubber plantations, residents told us they still face crumbling infrastructure, undrinkable water, inadequate healthcare, and limited opportunities nearly a century after the original deal. Want to see a crime in progress? It was actually a first for our drone team after we received a report this morning about a man breaking into cars near Pearl Street. Our Drone as First Responder officers heard the call come out and immediately sent a drone to the scene. Within 30 seconds, it captured this video. Thankfully, our officers in cars arrived shortly thereafter and swiftly took the suspect into custody without issue. He was then booked into jail on three counts of First Degree Trespass to a Vehicle. Theft, and Criminal Possession of a Financial Transaction Device. We share this because we believe there could be additional victims whose cars were broken into. So if you parked in the alley or street area near the 1000 block of Pearl Street around 11 a.m. today, please check your cars and let us know if you might have been victimized. You can call Dispatch non-emergency anytime at 303-441-3333 reference case 25-12004. We’d also like to take this moment to remind the community that one of the best ways to protect your property and your vehicles is to keep them locked. And I don’t think that those attacks have had any meaningful impact on the course of the war. And of course as you were alluding to, if anything it speeded up the end of the war because there is good reason to think that the Russian response to these long-range drone attacks by the Ukrainians is that the Russians have decided to retaliate by attacking Odessa and other Ukrainian sites on the Black Sea. And this has had a devastating effect on Ukraine because so much of Ukraine’s agricultural product as well as its industrial product moves out of Ukraine via the Black Sea ports. Motorcycles Stolen in Ado-Ekiti Recovered in Owo, Ondo state After Owner Tracks Down One of the Bikes. A motorcycle stolen in Ado Ekiti this morning was recovered in Owo, Ondo State, after the owner tracked it using a built-in location device, leading police to arrest some suspects while also recovering four stolen bikes in the process. This immediately disproves that Ukrainian missiles had anything to do with the shoot down. 2. There is zero proof an A-50 was shot down and in fact the currently best known information from the serial number on the tail indicates this was an Il-76TD, but it is not yet known for certain with any confirmation. 3. That we now know for 100% fact that Russian systems shot it down would seem to be even greater proof that it was not an A-50 because Russian S-400s in the area would absolutely have a IFF link with an A-50, but possibly not with the civilian variant Il-76TD. This weighs the likelihood heavier into Il-76 territory. 4. But there's some wrinkles to this. Sure, the missiles wouldn't initially lock onto an A-50, but there's some very remote possibility they were shooting another object and at the terminal phase, where IFF already gets iffy if not outright negated, the missile(s) may have redirected onto a potential A-50.
