I was shocked to find out today that the plaque honoring the officers who protected the U.S. Capitol, the Senators , the House members, and our staffs, on January 6, 2021 is sitting neglected in a back room. This plaque was ordered by a law we passed in 2022. The failure to display it as required in the 2022 law is an egregious insult to all those who defended the Capitol, all of those who were injured, defending the Capitol, and the five officers who died as a consequence of the attack on the Capitol. I'm working with my colleague from North Carolina, Thom Tillis, to introduce a bipartisan resolution to put this plaque up in the Senate wing of the Capitol until we can get full agreement from the House to display it as the 2022 law requires.

For months, Speaker Johnson refused to hang the Jan. 6th plaque honoring law enforcement. Then he placed it in a basement corner of the Capitol where it will rarely be seen. The brave officers, many from Northern Virginia, who defended the Capitol against the insurrection deserve better. This plaque belongs where everyone can see it.

Their heroism will never be forgotten. You can only look at the photo of the plaque, because the plaque has never been put up, as required by law, on the capitol of the United States. The plaque honoring the heroes of January 6 is finished, but the GOP refuses to hang it in the Capitol. Not one Republican has offered a reason why. If they can’t respect the officers who defended our democracy, the very least they can do is respect the law.

Today, I journeyed to an obscure part of the Capitol basement to see the long-awaited plaque honoring the police officers who defended Congress and America against Trump’s insurrectionary mob on January 6, 2021. To his credit, Sen. Tillis joined Democrats in demanding it be put up, but this spot is not accessible to the public. Speaker Johnson, come on—put the plaque in its rightful place of honor.
