Strong Condemnation of Indonesia’s Illegal Military Deployment in West Papua We strongly condemn the continued and escalating deployment of Indonesian military forces in West Papua. This military presence is illegal under international law and cannot be justified on the grounds of security or stability. The deployment is fundamentally driven by business and economic interests, particularly the exploitation of West Papua’s vast natural resources, rather than the protection or wellbeing of the Indigenous Papuan people. Military operations are strategically positioned to secure extractive projects, land control, and corporate interests, while Papuan communities face intimidation, displacement, human rights violations, and ongoing violence. West Papua remains an occupied territory, and Indonesia’s militarisation represents a clear violation of the Papuan people’s right to self-determination, as guaranteed under international law and the UN Charter. The use of military force to facilitate resource extraction constitutes a form of modern colonialism and must be urgently addressed by the international community. We call on the United Nations, regional bodies, and all states committed to human rights and international law to: •Demand an immediate halt to Indonesia’s military operations in West Papua •Ensure unrestricted access for UN human rights mechanisms, journalists, and humanitarian organisations •Hold Indonesia accountable for violations of international humanitarian and human rights law •Support a peaceful, just, and internationally mediated process that respects the rights and aspirations of the Papuan people Silence enables abuse. The people of West Papua deserve justice, peace, and the full recognition of their fundamental rights.

Geneva: BNM’s Foreign Secretary, Faheem Baloch, addressed the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council, raising serious concerns about the situation in Balochistan. Reports highlight enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings, with families facing harassment. He called for an independent investigation, accountability, and the protection of fundamental rights. #BNMGlobalCampaign #BNMatHRC61 #HRC61 Here is the complete text of his speech : Distinguished Chair, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to raise serious concerns about the human rights situation in Balochistan. Reports by Amnesty International say that enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings continue in the region. Many people are taken by security forces, disappear for long periods, and sometimes their bodies are later found. Amnesty International has described this pattern as a “kill and dump policy. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has also reported that enforced disappearances continue. Families searching for their missing loved ones often face pressure and harassment when they ask for answers. Several countries have also raised concerns. The United Kingdom has spoken about reports of mass graves in Balochistan and continues to raise human rights issues with Pakistan. The United States, in its annual human rights report, has documented cases of killings, disappearances, and torture. Members of the European Union, including the Netherlands, have also highlighted these concerns. Experts at the United Nations Human Rights Council have called on Pakistan to investigate these cases and respect international human rights law. We respectfully ask this Council to support an independent investigation, ensure accountability, and help protect the basic rights of the people of Balochistan. Thank you.

Civil society statement on continued network shutdowns and platform blocking in Pakistan We, a collective of human rights activists and civil society organisations, express profound concern over the increasing instances of #internetshutdowns and #socialmedia platform blocking, specifically in the lead up to and following the general elections in #Pakistan. These actions not only infringe upon the fundamental rights of #freedomofexpression and access to information but also set a troubling precedent of throttling genuine political discourse in the country. The arbitrary blocking of platforms, including the prolonged and unannounced disruption of "X" (formerly known as #Twitter), is a sobering illustration of growing digital censorship in the country. Such actions not only silence diverse political voices, but also create an environment which contributes to the spread of misinformation. Today, digital platforms play a pivotal role in shaping public discourse, and ensuring the free flow of information, through these digital mediums, is imperative for an informed society and fair electoral processes. The suppression of digital platforms, especially when initiated without transparency, often lacks adherence to due legal process and thus, undermines Pakistan’s international law commitments. The complete silence of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (#PTA) is extremely alarming as they have failed to furnish any reasons for its actions and exceeded its mandate to block an entire internet platform. The absence of transparency in the decision-making processes surrounding network #shutdowns and platform blocking and complete disregard for any accountability has resulted in an obvious erosion of trust between the state and its citizens. We are also dismayed by reports of throttling of #VPNs, undermining people’s access to information and right to privacy. In light of these concerns, we call for immediate action to reverse the course of digital censorship in Pakistan. Specifically, we urge the government and public bodies to; - Repeal sections of the law such as Section 37 of PECA that enable censorship and violate Article 19 right to freedom of speech and press freedom and Article 19-A right of access to information - Act with transparency on decisions that impact the free use of the internet, including for political and economic purposes. - Issue statement of clarification, outlining the reasons and legal basis for the recent blocking of "X" and other affected platforms. - Avoid future actions that obstruct the free flow of information and adersely affect political discourse within the countries and take back all legislative proposals expanding control and censorship over the internet including the e-safety bill from the previous government’s tenure should not be revived. - Abide by #Pakistan’s commitments to uphold freedom of expression and right to access to information under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights We urge the incoming government, regulators and other public bodies to recognise that any action that affects the flow of information and limits citizen’s ability to express themselves, has a direct and lingering impact on citizen’s human rights including the right to political participation. THE CONDUCT OF PROCEEDINGS IN THE CASE AGAINST HONOURABLE TUNDU A. LISSU IS THE LAW BEING DISREGARDED? The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) raises its voice regarding the troubling conduct in the criminal case against Honourable Tundu Antipas Lissu — a lawyer, former Member of Parliament, and one of the nation’s prominent advocates for human rights, good governance, and constitutionalism. Since his arrest, there has been a disturbing pattern undermining the principles of justice, violating legal procedures, and casting a heavy shadow over our criminal justice system. This is evident in the following: His arrest was conducted without adherence to lawful procedures, signaling an abuse of power; The charges appear to be politically motivated, raising serious concerns about the use of judicial processes as tools for political ends; Denial of even the basic right to greet and meet with fellow citizens before the official hearing of the case; Repeated adjournments of the case on legally unsubstantial grounds, indicating a deviation from legal focus; Interference with or denial of the accused’s right to private consultations with his lawyers, which violates the right to equal legal representation; Indications of breaches of the attorney-client privilege, which is protected under the Constitution and legal framework, and is a cornerstone of the right to an effective legal defense. The right of a client to consult privately with their lawyer is a fundamental right protected by the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Evidence Act, and the Code of Ethics for Advocates. To restrict or interfere with this right is to undermine the foundation of the justice process and impair the accused’s ability to defend themselves adequately before the court. TLS emphasizes the following: The law must not be used as a weapon against justice; State authorities must not place themselves above the Constitution or the laws enacted by Parliament; The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) must reflect deeply on the significant constitutional powers he holds in criminal justice and whether there is sufficient accountability to protect citizens' rights and ensure adherence to the law at all times; The right to legal assistance is not a privilege — it is a right of every citizen. Any criminal case, especially those involving individuals with political or social stature, must be conducted with transparency, fairness, and with respect for human dignity. The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) continues to closely monitor the progress of this case. We reiterate that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done. We call upon the Judiciary and all state organs to uphold and protect the rights of the accused in accordance with the law and the Constitution. Furthermore, we urge all lawyers in the country, the media, and human rights stakeholders to continue championing the protection of justice, freedom of expression, and the rule of law — without fear or favour. #Kobani #Kurds #Rojava #Syria Urgent Statement Addressed to the United Nations Regarding the Siege Imposed on the City of Kobani (Human Rights Organization in Syria Human Rights Organization in the Euphrates) Our organization follows with grave concern the serious humanitarian developments resulting from the siege imposed on the city of Kobani and its countryside for several days. This siege places the lives of approximately half a million civilians at direct risk amid harsh living conditions that are deteriorating day by day. The complete cutoff of water, electricity, and fuel, combined with the total lack of basic humanitarian aid—including food, medicine, infant formula, and heating supplies—has led to a sharp decline in the humanitarian situation. Furthermore, the Kurdish Red Crescent has reported fatalities among children due to extreme cold and the lack of medical care, serving as a dangerous indicator of an impending large-scale humanitarian catastrophe if immediate intervention is not undertaken. The continuation of this siege constitutes a clear violation of International Humanitarian Law, particularly the obligations related to the protection of civilians and ensuring unhindered access to aid, in accordance with the Geneva Conventions and customary rules binding on all parties. Accordingly, we issue this urgent appeal to: The United Nations, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and all relevant international bodies to: Take immediate action to lift the siege on the city of Kobani and its countryside. Open safe humanitarian corridors to ensure the protection of civilians and the evacuation of the most vulnerable cases. Deliver urgent humanitarian aid—including food, medicine, fuel, and heating materials—without any delay. Secure access for international relief teams to assess needs and provide an emergency response. Pressure all parties to ensure respect for International Humanitarian Law and prevent the imposition of any form of collective punishment on civilians. We emphasize that the protection of civilians is a legal and moral responsibility of the international community. Any delay in intervention will exacerbate the suffering of the population and result in avoidable loss of life. We demand urgent action before the current crisis turns into an uncontainable humanitarian disaster. Human Rights Organization in Syria Human Rights Organization in the Euphrates, January 24, 2026

UN CALLS FOR THE CRIMES OF M23 & KAGAME'S RDF TO BE RECOGNIZED AS GENOCIDE: "M23 together with Rwanda's RDF have committed grave crimes against humanity: Mass Murder, Torture, Rape, Sexual Slavery, Severe Deprivation of Freedom" declares United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights⤵️(translated from Daniel Michombero /Batubenga) War in the East of #RDC 🇨🇩: High Commissioner for Human Rights calls for recognition of genocide and urgent international action. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, urged on Wednesday, September 9, the Human Rights Council and international community to acknowledge the severity of the crimes committed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and to take action to curb the deadly violence that has been tearing apart the east of the country for decades. “It is time for this Council and the international community to act to stop the violence, protect victims, and ensure justice,” declared Volker Türk, calling on member states to provide adequate support to the Commission of Inquiry tasked with documenting the crimes and laying the groundwork for justice. The statement comes in a context where reports from the United Nations and NGOs denounce massive human rights violations in the DRC. A report published in early September by the UN concluded that the M23 rebels, as well as the Congolese armed forces and other armed groups, could be responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Last July, the M23 was accused of massacring more than 300 civilians, including women and children, near Virunga National Park. These acts of violence add to a long list of atrocities recorded for years in eastern DRC, where civilians bear the heaviest toll of a conflict fueled by geopolitical and economic interests. The High Commissioner’s call is part of a movement aimed at recognizing the crimes committed in the DRC as genocide. For several Congolese and international actors, such recognition would: • strengthen international mobilization against the violence, • accelerate the implementation of judicial mechanisms, • and ensure reparations and remembrance for the victims, as already recommended by the United Nations Mapping Project published in 2010. In urging member states to support the Commission of Inquiry, Volker Türk emphasizes the need to break the cycle of impunity. “This is about laying the foundations for justice for the countless victims of the conflict in the DRC,” he insisted in Geneva. This plea places the international community face-to-face with its responsibilities: to translate words into actions through concrete support for investigations, the protection of civilian populations, and the establishment of a transitional justice framework. As the DRC continues to suffer large-scale violence, the question of recognizing the genocide could mark a historic turning point. However, its realization will depend on the political will of UN member states, often torn between diplomatic considerations and the imperatives of justice.

Torture is a Crime Under International Law – Nigeria Must Be Held Accountable Torture is unequivocally prohibited under international law. The United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT), to which Nigeria is a state party, explicitly states in Article 2(2): "No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture." Furthermore, Article 1 of the Convention defines torture as any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted by or with the consent or acquiescence of public officials. The prohibition of torture is also enshrined in Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which affirm: "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." Despite these clear legal norms, the Nigerian regime continues to support and shield the Nigerian Army in its persistent use of torture, arbitrary detention, and extrajudicial actions—particularly against Biafran civilians, activists, and human rights defenders. Documented evidence and firsthand testimonies reveal a disturbing pattern of systemic abuse, targeting the Biafran population for peacefully asserting their right to self-determination. The Nigerian government's complicity in these human rights violations is not only a breach of its international obligations but a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. We, therefore, condemn in the strongest terms the Nigerian regime's endorsement and concealment of torture and other brutal practices against the Biafran people. These acts cannot go unpunished. The international community must act. It is time to uphold the principles of human dignity and the rule of law by supporting Biafra’s lawful quest for recognition. Biafra is a nation built on justice, democracy, and human rights. Unlike the oppressive Nigerian state, Biafra stands firm in its commitment to international norms and treaties, including the absolute prohibition of torture. Freedom, justice, and the rule of law demand that Biafra be recognized and supported.
