Must be a western thing. In the east we ski it down to the dirt, then keep skiing the dirt.

Resorts close early for 1 reason. Presold season passes. The fewer days they are open the more $ they make. When resorts relied on ticket sales most stayed open till the snow melted. I skied Tahoe every yr till late May, June, sometimes July. The epic pass killed that.

It's not necessary because we stop skiing, it's because we stop spending money. If there are 1000s of skiers per day buying hundreds of burgers the resort can eat the overhead required to be paid to the USFS. If there are only a few 100 buying 20 burgers a day you can't.
