Respectfully, Pastor—Black people aren’t killed because we fail to submit. Time and again, we’ve watched our people comply and still lose their lives. Framing the issue this way risks placing responsibility on the oppressed rather than confronting the systems that harm us. At a time when our history is... being erased, our jobs are being lost, and our civil rights—especially voting rights—are under attack, it’s critical that Black faith leaders speak with clarity and care. Even in addressing submission to authority, we must be accurate: when an officer uses unreasonable force, he is violating his authority. And when there is little to no accountability for those actions, the injustice multiplies. That’s why we can’t afford to mix words. Our people deserve truth, protection, and justice.
