I was listening to a sermon recently from one of my favorite teachers, Tim Keller, who sadly passed from this earth earlier this year. He was talking about the power and meaning of the words “Peace On Earth”. I was deeply encouraged and challenged to consider the significance of those words, particularly what they meant when announced by the angels 2000 years ago, and what they mean to us in 2023. As I was reflecting on all of that in light of what’s happening in my life personally with family and friends as well as in the world as a whole, I started thinking about a song I wrote a few years ago with my friend Tom Douglas called “A Desperate Benediction (Peace on Earth)” and suddenly found myself rewriting some of the words of this song, specifically related to right now...Christmas 2023. I’m not even sure as a songwriter what the rules are on this kind of a thing, but I felt strongly that I wanted to share it with you…So here you go. Peace on Earth, Christmas 2023.

People who follow along will know that from time to time I feature what I call Truth Matters Musical Moments. It’s a nod to my passion for music and two decades of working in recording studios in what I like to call mr reckless years. As a musician I miss those days as I reflect from time to time, but this clip reminded me of the joy of composition and scoring music. It’s an inspiring language that evokes a wide range of emotions, and I miss that. This piece just brought all the joy flooding back, not least not least because of my admiration of fellow Brit Jacob Collier, who is a talent beyond my ability to articulate. I call on world leaders to ensure yesterday’s United Nations declaration on #RoadSafety becomes more than words on a page. Let it be a promise to every family who was not in the General Assembly Hall, but who lives every day with the loss of a loved one. We can halve road deaths by 2030. Let’s keep that promise—for them.

My friend Toby Keith was a legend not just in the country music format but all music. He was also a great patriot whose love for God, Family and Country was displayed in his music and more importantly in the life he lived.
