In my opinion, I would advise Peller to go back to school and learn a skill or something. I think that would greatly improve his ideas on content creation and broaden his scope in the attention economy. However, let’s address this issue once and for all: Is literacy the same as education? In my recent post on politics, I tried to make a clear distinction between literacy and education, drawing context from Nigerian society and its knowledge collapse. Education is what we create with the tool of literacy, which enables us to access, analyze, and synthesize information, and by extension, apply that information to solving problems. As Geh Geh pointed out in his statement: if you claim to be educated and lack the creativity to solve a problem or create something, then your education is questionable — “You join the Olodo group.” Today, we have a Nigerian Society of Engineers, yet Lagos State continues to flood due to poor drainage structures and counterproductive environmental education. Nigeria as a country can’t even manage our oil resources by ourselves. Construction or production services by a Nigerian are often synonymous with substandard and fake, as the “Made in Nigeria” label implies. So to Solomon Buchi and co, what standard do you use as a metric to judge education and its quality in Nigeria? Is it literacy competency, speaking English proficiently, or applying information and skills gathered from the formal education curriculum to create value and solve problems? Until we answer these questions genuinely as a society, I still stand on my point: 65% of people considered educated in Nigeria are only literate and lack the intellectual capacity to apply the information they have gathered from the formal school system to solving problems in our society.
