I'd appreciate it if you read this article Rupert. The school system is not fit for purpose, created and managed by people who've never left the education system, and when normal children, especially boys, display normal childish behaviour, or act like normal boys, they're diagnosed as having a disorder and then funnelled through a SEND system, that they can never leave, so that millions of adults can make £mns out of them.

Absolutely spot on. We’ve sold too many of our kids a university dream that leaves them in debt with no real skills, while the trades that actually built Britain get ignored. Practical education, proper apprenticeships and a bit of pride in doing useful work again that’s how you give young British lads and lasses a proper shot. Well said Jez.

I followed exactly the same path at Chadderton Grammar School for Boys where I was taught woodwork, metalwork and geometrical & engineering drawing by an excellent teacher named Alan Mellor, who helped me learn basic techniques which can be applied to all skilled c'rafts with any materials. I now have a lifetime of experience[s] in making and mending/fixing things [h]and more skills in my little finger than all the Uni graduates in Britain have in their entire [b'rainless] bodies.

@JezHermerMBE I wanted to start an apprenticeship at 19/20, but the "wonderful" labour government (Blair) had just brought in "new deal" and the best I got was a 6 week painting and decorating course. Restore can change that for the new generation.

@JezHermerMBE That's exactly what we had in the 60s / 70s and is exactly what needs restoring. Giving the less academic degrees has done nothing other than devalue the degrees earned by those in the academic subjects. A first class honours in knitting = a first class honours in mathematics.

We absolutely need to be teaching our children skills and trades for the future. I think it went wrong when they started handing out participation trophies for children that didn't succeed, so they didn't feel left out. That's the problem right there ! Teaching them that it's ok they don't need to put the effort in , and that they will receive the same as the person who put in the graft.

@JezHermerMBE Absolutely spot on Jez. The education system that we had in the 1950s, parts of the 60s & 70s and 80s did exactly what you are talking about. That’s when we had British industry. Education can always be improved of course but Blair got it monumentally wrong.

@JezHermerMBE Not everyone is academic & those that weren't got soaked up by big industry, Industry that gave them practical skills ,gave them character & a sense of pride , Those industries are now gone thanks to our leaders & practical handed people have been left to find their own way.

@JezHermerMBE My son is going into year 10. He says why does he have to pick Geography, History or RE as he will not be using these in later life? Why can't it be about how to manage money or life in general! I did a YTS when I left school until college and it does help get into the real world

@JezHermerMBE Exactly what I think needs doing. I have a terrible job getting hold of reliable trades people who know how to do things properly. Some are not even properly trained & make a terrible job of things. There's a shortage of good ones so they concentrate on the most lucrative tasks.

@JezHermerMBE Agree.Left School,poor GCSE's,Science un-gradable,got into Hairdresser's,day release College,passed all,including Science with distinction,ended up being Manageress.Autistic Son left at 15,no support,no Grades,started as Pot Wash,ended up assistant Chef.Passion encourages Grades.

@JezHermerMBE We will need to drasticly overhaul education in the wake of AI, I believe there are a lot of savings to be made in education, that could help fund tax cuts.

@JezHermerMBE There is so much research that has been done over the years that remains gathering dust that could be formalized etc and put through the meat grinder and formulate better governance systems but alas politics always stands in the way .

@JezHermerMBE My children's ex grammar school made things with egg boxes. My husband's grammar school had a really good wood working department.

@JezHermerMBE The decline started with the closure of engineering training boards, in favour of paper based qualifications like NVQs. The City and Guilds qualification's were watered down to supposedly get more people ( not very qualified ) NVQs.

I’m just 67, at my secondary school, i was taught, Metalworking Woodworking Bricklaying Painting and decorating Plastic moulding Forging Mechanical engineering Electrical Engineering After 25 years as an electrician, and now 30 years running a retail business, I have never been out of work, employed probably 40 people over the years, and rarely get ill (self employed 😉) It’s amazing how it gives you an eye for who wants to succeed in life, and who wants to just take .
