Very good scene, it would have been even better if Dorothy had suddenly grown up, like happened in the "Lost King of Oz" book.

Dorothy wandering through the abandoned Emerald City in Return to Oz (1985) and suddenly being hunted by the Wheelers. A bizarre, eerie sequence for what was supposed to be a family fantasy.

Return to Oz (1985) is genuinely terrifying for a “family” fantasy. The Princess Mombi scene alone, those interchangeable heads in glass cabinets and the way they start screaming when Dorothy moves.

The legendary editor Walter Murch cuts on the exact frame an actor blinks, which is the way your brain edits. Editor Walter Murch argued that the best cut often lands on the exact frame an actor blinks, because a blink marks the end of a thought. He laid this out in his book In the Blink of an Eye. Murch treats the blink as the body's own edit point. The idea links human attention to the rhythm of cutting.

Return to Oz (1985) is genuinely unhinged for a Disney film, that cold, eerie tone, the Wheelers, the head-swapping room, and those Jim Henson Creature Shop effects still look incredible… terrified as a kid and still kept going back to it.

Walter Murch described the elevated train noise in The Godfather (1972) restaurant scene as “neurons rubbing together in Michael’s brain.” The sound isn’t atmosphere, it’s thought. Anxiety, inevitability, all externalized before the gunshot ever happens.
