Quick demo of Zero’s new background queries. Zero’s sync is query-based. Rather than specifying what data you want using rules or some other separate system, you just use queries. Right inside the client app, you do a query using a full sql-style language. You get filters, subqueries , limits, etc. Zero syncs the data backing these queries to the client. It’s important to realize Zero isn’t really a cache. It’s a replica. It’s eagerly replicating a precise snapshot of a slice of your database - the slice covered by the queries you have open. So there is never stale data in Zero. When you close a query we delete the rows uniquely returned by that query because we can no longer keep them up to date. Of course that kind of sucks for the common case of doing a query, navigating, then pressing “back”. Ideally we want that back nav to be fast. To address this Zero 0.17 adds background queries. You can add a ttl to a query and it will keep running and syncing in the background. This is much different than normal caching because this data stays up to date. If you make the same query again, the results will be *instantly* available *and already up to date with server*. If you make a different query the data from the background query is used client-side to answer the new query instantly if possible. This all happens completely automatically. Just by adding the ttl flag.

Police have arrested a 43-year-old sergeant in connection with the fatal shooting of a truck driver late last night. Police spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, Shilongo Malakia, got into an altercation with an officer after police stopped the truck, of which he was the co-driver, to request the driver’s licence and weighbridge papers. However, they only provided the driver's licence. The officer then allegedly asked the driver to park the truck alongside the road, as he could not proceed without the weighbridge document. After parking, the driver returned to collect his licence. While speaking with the officer, the co-driver joined them, and an argument ensued. The officer instructed them to drive back to the weighbridge as per procedure. Malakia reportedly insulted the officer, leading to a fight. Malakia then jumped into the truck and drove towards a female officer manning the roadblock. The male officer fired at the truck, and one bullet struck Malakia in the stomach, killing him instantly. Police have also dismissed rumours that the same officer was involved in a previous shooting in Oshikango and has never been charged with murder. The officer is scheduled to appear in the Ohangwena Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, facing a murder charge. Police investigations into the matter continue. During a 15th Air Force bombing raid over Parma, the B-24 named "Big Fat Mama" (Serial 41-29453) collided mid-air with a fellow bomber, "Southern Gal" (Serial 42-52454). The impact was so violent that it sheared off "Southern Gal's" entire vertical tail stabilizer. The severed fin wedged itself tightly onto the nose section of "Big Fat Mama," completely blocking the bombardier's view and severely disrupting the plane's aerodynamics. The collision instantly split the fates of the two crews: The Crew of "Big Fat Mama": Believing the bomber was doomed during an initial steep dive, four crew members bailed out over enemy territory. Two were captured and spent the war as POWs, while two evaded capture with the help of Italian partisans. The remaining crew stayed at the controls, fighting the heavily damaged aircraft across the Mediterranean. Relying on sheer piloting skill, they executed a successful emergency landing at a U.S. fighter strip in Borgo-Poretta, Corsica. Everyone remaining on board survived. The Crew of "Southern Gal": Ripped of its tail surfaces and flight controls, the aircraft went into an uncontrollable spin and plunged to the ground near Villafranca Lunigiana. Trapped inside the rapidly falling fuselage, eight crew members were killed in action. Only two managed to escape the spinning aircraft; both parachuted safely into occupied territory but were quickly captured and spent the rest of the war as POWs.
