📍Surda mine, Jharkand Operated by Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), restarted and commenced mining operations last year. The mine is expected to generate Rs. 300 crore as annual revenue, providing direct employment for around 1,100 people and indirect employment for about 5,000 locals. Surda mine will contribute Rs. 75 crore annually to the exchequer, with Rs 25 crore in royalty payments. State Minister for Mineral Development Phiona Nyamutoro said the launch demonstrates Government’s commitment to developing the mineral sector under NDP IV. She noted that Yumbe and Zombo are among gold-rich areas in West Nile and urged Euro Gold to comply with the law, create jobs and internships, support communities and progressively move into medium- and large-scale mining. She reaffirmed Government’s resolve to close illegal mining operations and called for improved safety, insurance and healthcare for miners. Euro Gold CEO Ben Feni said the company spent more than two years surveying and exploring the area before securing its mining ground. Its operations cover about 79 square kilometres across West Nile, with Yumbe as its pioneer site. The company targets production of at least 20kg of gold per week and plans to establish a processing plant to strengthen traceability and accountability. “We are going to build our nation,” Feni said. Assimwe Kenneth, CEO of the Uganda Association of Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners, commended Euro Gold and Government for supporting formalisation. He urged communities to keep children in school and out of mining, encouraged the use of PPE and called for accessible insurance schemes for small-scale miners. Tusigwire Julius, Head of the Mineral Police Unit, said the unit, established in 2017, is responsible for combating illegal mining, mineral smuggling, fraud and forced labour. He revealed that more than 15 illegal mining sites have been closed this year, while raising concern over recent deaths in illegal mining sites. Eng. Grace Nakku, from the Office of the Commissioner, Minerals and Energy Department, said responsible mining is key to attracting investment and growing Uganda’s mineral sector. Silver is still strong. But will it stay at these levels long term? Will silver go higher? If owning silver bars is not your thing, the other way to play this is by owning silver mining stock. But the issue is that 75% of silver comes as a biproduct of copper, lead or zinc mining. Only 1% to 2% of their revenue comes from silver. So those types of mining companies don't care about the price of silver. There are very few mining companies that are primary silver producers, which is more than 50% of revenue from silver. The next thing to consider is, which companies can still expand their production? Which ones have really high grade ore? I only own two silver mining stocks. One of them is Aya Gold & Silver. US ticker is AYASF and the Canada ticker is AYA . to. I have owned it for several years. They are producing silver at their mine Zgounder in Morocco. They have a second project, called Boumadine, that will open in the future. They were already making great profits at Zgounder when silver was only $30 per oz. Their profits at $75 per oz are insane. The markets are not valuing the silver mining stocks at $75 per oz yet. Aya can mine silver at $19 per ounce and be breakeven. Their margin at $75 silver is currently $56 per ounce. That means Aya has an estimated annual operating cash flow of $336 million (at $75 silver). That is only for their Zgounder mine which is already operating. Their Boumadine mine is going to be 5x larger. If you believe in silver long term and don't want to own the physical metal, my top silver mine stock in my portfolio is Aya Gold & Silver. But the issue is that 75% of silver comes as a biproduct of copper, lead or zinc mining. Only 1% to 2% of their revenue comes from silver. So those types of mining companies don't care about the price of silver. There are very few mining companies that are primary silver producers, which is more than 50% of revenue from silver. The next thing to consider is, which companies can still expand their production? Which ones have really high grade ore? I only own two silver mining stocks. One of them is Aya Gold & Silver. US ticker is AYASF and the Canada ticker is AYA . to. I have owned it for several years. They are producing silver at their mine Zgounder in Morocco. They have a second project, called Boumadine, that will open in the future. They were already making great profits at Zgounder when silver was only $30 per oz. Their profits at $75 per oz are insane. The markets are not valuing the silver mining stocks at $75 per oz yet. Aya can mine silver at $19 per ounce and be breakeven. Their margin at $75 silver is currently $56 per ounce. That means Aya has an estimated annual operating cash flow of $336 million (at $75 silver). That is only for their Zgounder mine which is already operating. I shared how progressive reforms under the Narendra Modi government including New Labour Reforms have opened opportunities for women in mines which was accepted by the Labour Ministry on my request, highlighted the all-women-operated Begumpet station in Telangana, scientific closure of 143 mines setting a global record, and the Jharia rehabilitation initiative aimed at ensuring dignified living for affected families. Encouraged students to venture into startups in mine exploration and technology, strengthening self-reliance in the sector.
