Totally agree with the replies saying Crowe inherited a lot of what Reed brought. Modern Crowe in particular is such a joy to watch.

The way he says "Oh you should see the coliseum Spaniard.." sounds like he was actually there and not just acting.

As a writer, you put that dialogue on paper, you go to bed, you are proud of yourself, you wrote something good, then comes an actor like Oliver Reed and takes those words to a place you were not even able to imagine. Now you can’t sleep, thinking about how that happened, how lucky you are that someone took something good and turned it into something sublime.
