Eight months after she left with a wild boyfriend, Twiggy came back to say hello. She made straight for the stables, where she stooped her head to each of her former Keepers in turn. Then she was down at the mud bath with the orphaned elephants and loitering in the gardens with the smaller orphans, as though the past eight months spent roaming the wild had never happened. Keeper Joseph takes charge of the camera to capture why the Keepers have christened her "our little frog." To her, it must feel like the whole world revolves around her whims. Keepers know to let her out of her stockade first in the morning, or there will be tantrums. At the mud bath, she waits until the boys have finished before taking her turn – wriggling in the mud, flopping like a fish, striking her signature frog pose with legs splayed in every direction. We could not believe our eyes when we saw Alia in the middle of the mud bath last month. She arrived at the Nursery in October 2025, withdrawn and slow to approach the herd. She watched the others from the edges – feeding, putting weight back on, working out who was who. Mud baths happened around her, not with her. And then, the Keepers found her trunk-deep in one, alongside Mzinga, Muridjo and Olomunyak, getting comprehensively coated. A step in the right direction, wouldn't you agree?
