To be clear: Jonathan Ashworth’s call for a multi year pay deal is exactly what the BMA have been asking for. Doctors know pay restoration won’t happen overnight. But so far, Wes Streeting hasn’t put forward any clear path. It’s time he came to the table with a serious offer.

The irony of calling Resident Drs selfish for striking on the run up towards xmas because YOU the public need taking care of by them but refusing to pay them adequately! And no they haven't had a full pay restoration - most are on less money than a PA.

"For too many of the 15,000 NYSNA nurses who are on strike, they are not able to make their ends meet. They are not asking for a multi-million dollar salary. What they are asking for is for their pensions to be safeguarded, to be protected in their own workplace, to receive the pay and the health benefits that they deserve," he said.

When you were in opposition you said: “The power to stop these strikes lies squarely with the Government.” Now you’re in power and offering doctors a 0.9% above inflation pay award that would take 20+ years to undo the damage since 2008. It is not fair or reasonable for a fully qualified resident doctor in England to be earning £17.56/hr with £100,000 student loan debt. They’re asking for £22.67/hr - a bargain rate for their skill set. All doctors want is a credible path to full pay restoration. The only thing missing is a Government actually willing to meaningfully negotiate.
