An elderly grandmother in Canada was euthanized against her will while in a care facility . A room full of doctors surrounded her bed while her family was out of town, and tried to talk her into it . Over the years, many of you have joined me in celebrating this truly special girl turned young woman, Maddie. I am heartbroken to share with you that Maddie has passed away at the age of 21. I’m sharing a glimpse into my friendship with Maddie because I want people to know how truly special she was. I met Maddie when Kevin and I were filming Kevin Can Wait. Make-A-Wish America reached out and told us that a young girl’s wish was to meet us. I was so touched. This beautiful little girl was a fan of King of Queens? And we of course said yes. Maddie and her family came to visit us on set, and what started as a meet-and-greet turned into a real, almost decade-long, lasting friendship. Maddie would text me almost every day. She sent me funny videos, shared stories about her life, and came out to LA with her family, where I attempted to get her to expand her palate (though she always circled back to her favorite, a Caesar salad). We shared many beautiful moments that have kept me positive in moments of difficulty and darkness, and she was about to come to LA again, where I planned on celebrating her for her birthday and her recent accomplishments. Maddie had Spinal Muscular Atrophy type two (SMA), but she never let it define her. She was excited to begin advocacy work and had recently told me she was officially going to start speaking publicly about her experiences, not even for herself, but to help others. She had big dreams, and I was so proud watching her grow into the leader I always knew she was. Maddie loved her family and friends fiercely. For her young age, she would prefer to be with friends and family, playing games and our favorite, Phase 10. She loved all things girly: nails, hair, makeup, the Timberwolves. And she hated snow (though she lived in Minnesota), and more importantly, she loved helping people. She wrote me love notes daily, and I only hope I had let her know how much joy she brought me. It is me who hopes that she knew how much I loved her. I received this text from her friend Emma, whom I knew from the many funny videos Maddie sent me of the two of them. I’ve included it below. After flying to Minnesota to say goodbye (although she had already passed while I was in the air), I wanted her to know what she meant to me. That she was thinking of me in this way and wanted me to have the things she mentioned, that she cared so much, is also truly touching and heartbreaking. Maddie had so much life ahead of her. Her disease didn’t stop her spirit or dim her light. She was hopeful, brilliant, and genuinely excited for her future. I will miss her texts, her videos, and hearing from her every day. They always made me smile. I will miss her humor and the light she brought into this world every single day. Maddie had just turned 21. This is one of my very favourite videos of Liz. It captures her doing the thing that gave her the most joy. Liz was a shy person by nature, but behind a camera she was relaxed, dynamic and in control. I loved watching her take photos and could do it for hours. Liz’s dream was to become a professional photographer. This shoot arranged by Richard Heathcote and Gareth Cattermole was an experience she spoke about every day for the remainder of her life. She knew exactly what she wanted her shots to look like, and definitely gave far more banter than she was given. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that her relationship with both these photographers changed her world. They gave her the confidence to believe in herself and to follow her heart. They treated her as a true photographer - that meant everything to her. Liz was kind, funny, generous and stubborn. She had amazing ideas and loved being taught how to execute them. She should have had a lifetime to hone her craft. Instead on Wednesday of this week she went to sleep for the final time. Not content with leaving her photographs for the world to enjoy, Liz has left her body to medical science. #PursuitOfJade Ep 27 will definitely remain a favourite of mine. While Chang Yu's anger toward Xie Zheng was completely justified, he came clean and genuinely groveled. I loved that he proposed again- this time as his true self, with nothing hidden. I know some might wonder why Chang Yu forgave him so quickly. Here's why: regardless of his name or title, Xie Zheng has always been sincere in how he treated her. Deep down, she knew that the bond they shared- every high and low- was him, through and through. That title was never a privilege; it was a burden. And his hesitation to tell her came from knowing, as this episode made clear, that it would become her burden too. I also appreciated that he considered asking his mentor to make her a goddaughter. You have to understand the social hierarchy of that era- nobility rarely married commoners. Concubines, yes. Official wives, no. He didn't care about any of that, but he understood that she might. And she did- right up until they physically fought it out and had that raw, honest conversation by the river. And then came that moment- when he spoke of how fondly he remembered his time in Lin'an with her, how happy it made him. That truly reached her. Because what mattered most to Chang Yu was that he loved her home and her people the way she did. (my tears fell here too 🥹) This is why this show has been so consistently good from the start. The characters always have these gentle, meaningful conversations. It's okay to get angry- but in the end, what matters is that you talk it through.

Ren Susu, to me, is like a candle in a dark room. She was never afraid of giving people warmth, even if every act of kindness meant another piece of herself melted away. She spent so much of her life becoming light for others that she never noticed she was slowly disappearing. By the time everyone thank her for her glow, there was barely anything left of her. She has never hesitated to do what she believes is right, even when it demands impossible sacrifices. Like Qingyi, she has an incredibly strong sense of justice, and she spends much of her life living for other people too. The difference is that Qingyi learned to give because he believed love had to be earned, while Susu learned to sacrifice because she believed her own happiness always came at someone else’s expense. She doesn’t put herself last because she is naturally selfless. She does it because she no longer believes she should come first. When she learns that Qingyi’s tendons were severed by the Huo family.
