McFaul: But we keep talking about Trump wants to do a deal to end the war. I'm not so sure that's true. I think he wants to do a deal with Putin. And the Ukraine thing is kind of a sideshow. If doesn’t work out, Trump doesn't really care because there's no other way to explain all of the concessions that he has already given to Putin even before any negotiation. So that suggests to me that, in fact, he actually is not trying to negotiate a deal. He's trying to nurture a relationship with Vladimir Putin.

Trump sees that there's no prospect of any progress through negotiations. There's no deal to be had. Because Putin wants to subjugate Ukraine, and Ukraine won't be subjugated. There's no negotiation about that. So he's just decided to move on. In the meantime, Trump started this war against Iran, which he's now stuck in. He doesn't want to use ground troops. He doesn't want to have a wider war against Iran, an all-out campaign for regime change. And yet, unless he does that, Iran is going to be a thorn in his side and a thorn in the side of the global economy indefinitely. This is going to continue to fester unless he deals with it, and he really doesn't want to. That's the number one thing he's concerned about now.

He attacks other people based on what they look like or who they pray to or who they love.. He tries to divide Americans because he struggles with uplifting all Americans. I think it shows profound weakness.. Attacking the identity of the VP doesn’t at all reflect negatively on the VP but shows a real insecurity about Trump. This guy is nervous as hell to face Kamala Harris. He’s already trying to back out of the debate. Part of that is because he knows she’s going to whoop him in the debate… There’s another reason why he really doesn’t want to debate her and doesn’t really want to have a conversation about the issues. It’s because he can’t defend his record. They play a lot of psychological games trying to keep Trump on side. But Trump wants Putin to be victorious. He wants Russian tanks to roll through Kyiv because Zelenskyy would not participate in his 2020 election shenanigans with Burisma, trying to quote-unquote "prove" that Hunter Biden was some sort of international criminal. The absurdity and the pettiness of it make me roll my eyes, but that's why Trump hates Ukraine. That's why he sides with Putin. He's got reasons that have nothing to do with America's interests, they're about his own completely skewed values. If you ask yourself, "How would Trump behave if he wanted Putin to win?" You can look at the last year and a half, and you know very clearly exactly how he'd behave.
