Zoe Saldana is a hero and champion for dyslexia. To put herself out there, and expose something so personal, took a lot of guts. Thank you for that. Dyslexia is a neurobiological disorder that affects phonological processing and word retrieval. I know that’s a mouthful but there is power in knowledge. While dyslexics struggle with reading, and word retrieval, the way their brain is wired, they actually have an advantage in creativity and thinking “outside the box.” At my daughter’s school, they refer to dyslexia as their “super power.” Not unlike Zoe Saldana in The Avengers. The problem is, the majority of cases are not diagnosed, the children do not get the proper treatment, and that super power is never realized. 20% of school aged children have dyslexia, but only 4% are diagnosed. That’s a LOT of untapped potential out there. It’s possible many people reading this post are dyslexic and don’t realize it.
