One of rock's most bitter feuds just ended on stage. Ritchie Blackmore hadn't played with Deep Purple since walking out in 1993, and he asked to come back for one song. Last night at Jones Beach, at 81, he played "Smoke on the Water." "I haven't played rock music in 25 years."

Esta semana pasó lo imposible. Ritchie Blackmore tocó “Smoke on the Water” con Deep Purple. Después de más de 30 años de peleas que parecían irreconciliables, especialmente con Ian Gillan. No solo sonaron increíble. Fue una reconciliación conmovedora. Siempre hay esperanza…

"I'll see you in the bar." That's Ian Gillan to Ritchie Blackmore last night, after the two ended a 33-year feud by playing one song together, "Smoke on the Water." Gillan called him "the great legend, the immortal." The ice is gone.

Tommy Bolin would be 75 today. By 25 he'd played in Zephyr, the James Gang, and replaced Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Glenn Hughes just called him a genius. Then he was gone at 25. This is the beginning, his Zephyr days.

In 1997, squeaky-clean crooner Pat Boone made a big-band album of heavy metal covers. It was so bizarre it got him kicked off Christian TV. And playing guitar on it? Ritchie Blackmore, the man who wrote "Smoke on the Water," soloing over Boone's lounge version of his own song.

Wake Up to Guitar Greatness Ritchie Blackmore – "Stargazer" (Rising, 1976) Blackmore built the riff on a cello and soloed in Phrygian dominant, all under a full orchestra, for Dio's tale of a wizard's doomed tower.

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow performing 'Highway Star' live at Loreley, Germany Memories in Rock, in 2016. The song was released by Deep Purple and it was born on a tour bus going to Portsmouth in 1971 when a reporter asked the band how they wrote songs. To demonstrate, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore grabbed an acoustic guitar and began playing a riff consisting of a single "G" repeated over and over, while vocalist Ian Gillan improvised lyrics over the top. The song was refined and was performed that same night. The song first appeared on the 1972 LP Machine Head and remained one of the band's live concert staples, being the set opener even before it was released on any album.
