"As Masvingo Residents Minister Ezra Chadzamira summoned both Chief Murinye and Mutangiri to resolve their conflict on 12th January 2026." 11th January 2026 *Wezhira Munya* On 11th January 2026, Philimon Mutangiri, the owner of Riverton Academy Extension boarding school, insulted Ephias Munodawafa, known as Chief Murinye "Musatanyoko." Chief Murinye and the drunk headman Mukamwi blocked traffic for students heading to school. The term "Musatanyoko" is highly insulting, and Chief Murinye retaliated with insults. Mutangiri, who was born and raised in the Murinye area, is a relative of Chief Murinye and owns multiple schools and businesses. This new school is located in the Murinye rural area of Masvingo West. Both Chief Murinye and Mutangiri confirmed separately to Change Radio that they had been summoned by ZANU-PF Masvingo West Member of Parliament and Residents Minister Ezra Chadzamira to resolve the conflict. Both (Murinye and Mutangiri) are supporters of Zanu PF. Chief Murinye and headman Mukamwi used their vehicles to block the road to Riverton Academy Extension. Chief Murinye utilized his grey car, provided by the government as part of the Chief's working package, while headman Mukamwi used his white kombi to obstruct the road. Chief Murinye alleged that Mutangiri did not consult him as the traditional owner of the land and also failed to engage with the Murinye community members. Consequently, Chief Murinye and headman Mukamwi ordered parents to take their children home, stating that the school would not open as scheduled the following day. Many parents and children returned home due to this conflict. Parents felt that their children would not be safe after Chief Murinye threatened to throw snakes into the schoolyard, prompting them to take their children back home. However, some parents chose to leave their kids at school. Speaking on condition of anonymity, parents who spoke to Change Radio criticized Chief Murinye for blocking the road and urged both him and Mutangiri to resolve their issues while the children are learning. In a video, Mutangiri and Chief Murinye exchanged insults in the presence of senior police officers from Nemamwa. Mutangiri further alleged that Chief Murinye demanded a substantial sum of money for bribery. Additionally, Mutangiri stated that he had connected electricity to the chief's homestead and purchased a transformer for $7,000 USD for him. Mutangiri claimed that the chief was demanding a contract to be signed ensuring that all his children could attend the school for free, understanding that the chief has more than one wife and many school-aged children. Controversial Chief Murinye, in 2023, fled on foot while being pursued by villagers in Village 33B after attempting to stop a funeral that was already underway. He claimed the burial was taking place within his jurisdiction without his authority, although the area is also claimed by another chief. More than a dozen villagers were later arrested and convicted of assault in connection with the incident and were fined by a court.
