That’s because he expects his pitcher to be there. That play is mainly Cole’s fault.

@KevsSports Cole shouldn't be expecting Rizzo to make the play, but Rizzo also shouldn't be expecting Cole to get there in time. Every 1B knows you play this ball as if you're going to take it yourself.

Your video misrepresents the curved path of the ball. Rizzo over shoots the fielding point and his momentum is then going the wrong way. You don't capture this in the video.

I actually consulted my HS teammate who played first and pitched then played in college and he agreed with me. Pitcher has to cover but rizzo’s footwork was horrible.

It was hit off the end. Anytime you get a full swing and a squibber. The ball has weird side spin. He did the right thing to make sure he caught the ball to be able to flip it. Cole has to be at 1B covering
