Children born in the diaspora are now returning to Mogadishu & enjoying their time in the city. This trend is largely attributed to the significant improvements in security. Over the past three years, Mogadishu has not experienced any terrorist incidents, and there have only been three major incidents in the last three years. This progress has contributed to making the city a more peaceful and secure place for both residents and visitors.

On February 2, our comrade Joe Herosy attended a meeting of the Quincy city council and spoke out in the interests of renters and longtime city residents against rising housing costs. This was the first city council meeting in years with an open forum for residents to speak. Last year, a slate of liberal candidates swept the city council elections on an anti-corruption platform critical of seven-term mayor Tom Koch and his cronies on the council, who voted to raise his and their own salaries by 79% in 2024. 20 years ago, the average two-bedroom apartment in Quincy went for $1,250 a month. Today, that same apartment would cost a couple over $2,600 a month. Home prices have more than doubled. Meanwhile, median income has increased just 14% since 2010. During the same time, Quincy city government has given tax breaks and subsidies to developers and holding companies that displace longtime residents with highly-paid professionals and turn homes into expensive financial assets. We Communists say that houses are for people to live in, not for landlords and conglomerates to get rich off of. Comrade Joe proposed the formation of a tribune of the people, a citizens’ commission made up of working-class residents themselves, to collect resident grievances and develop solutions. If the new city council is interested in a government that defends the people of Quincy from corrupt, private interests, it’s up to them to listen to the people’s needs and deliver for them.

City Hall will be taking out a $170M, 30 year loan to finance the initial construction of the ~$316M Indoor Aquatic Facility. Interest and principle payments will require a potential property tax increase in both 2027 and 2028. Regina has a $890M debt limit, but it’s estimated by 2031 it will only have an available balance of $40M. The city has listed $1.094 billion in infrastructure and capital projects beyond 2030 that could require debt. Regina’s debt limit is authorized by the Saskatchewan Municipal Board and requires city council approval for an increase.

During 2026 budget deliberations Regina’s CFO, Daren Anderson, argued against the perception that city administration is bloated with bureaucratic waste. Anderson explained the ratio of staff per residents has steadily been declining, wage increases were still below inflation, management levels are low, and city operations cost less than they did a decade ago (adjusted for population and inflation). According to Anderson, Regina could raise taxes by 10% and still remain in the bottom 25% of municipal property taxes in Canada. Ageing infrastructure and overdue capital projects are largely driving the property taxes increase in the city, while the reserves are approaching depletion. Anderson illustrated that while the city does have community programs and initiatives, those accounts receive a negligible portion of property taxes in comparison to the bulk of core services the city provides.
