Gosling losing it makes this even better lol

The fact these Hollywood Reporter table discussions began seemingly in a hotel room is so jarring compared to the minimalist sets these kinds of things have now.

If your first response watching this is, “I disagree with Robert Duvall!” - relax.

Duvall wearing that jacket so well that it makes Gosling look like an amateur 🫡

He’s got a great point. How does he know which is the right one after 50 takes lol

Yeah, a director doing a hundred takes of a scene has a strong chance of hitting hard that law of diminishing returns and the editor that just wants to go home, thinking, "WTF? Okay, eeny, meeny, miny, moe...."

Kubrick was not good in understanding ppl, thats why his movies r hollow n ghost like

Kubrick explained that he wanted the lines to be so ingrained in the actor that it didn’t come off as acting at all. Yes, it was hard on the actors, but produced amazing results. Duvall is totally wrong here. Him saying they’re great movies with bad performances makes no sense

Now that he mentions it I don't remember any of his movies for a performance but I sure af remember the movies. Finch makes great stuff too. And films are ultimately the art of the director. Great performances can enhance the overall quality but they are not what's on trial.

Agree totally. Jack's performance in The Shining is overrated beyond imagination.

Best part is Duvall talking about Brando and someone says what movie and Duvall dosent say the movie…he was in Apocalypse Now ! lol

Yes, those famously terrible performances from The Shining and A Clockwork Orange.. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Couldn't have POSSIBLY used 2 worse examples to make his point

What the hell, why do I remember Robert Duvall passing away when he's clearly alive

if I were an actor, on the 20th take the last thing I'd dare to do was coming up with something new. Should the director like it, that would mean 30 more takes at least

I would have agreed with Duvall until yesterday but then I saw the Shining on an IMAX screen and it was like Opera: the whole thing had this heightened intensity and the performances made sense to me

God bless you, Mr Duvall. What is the point of making actors like Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman do 50 takes so that they're so exhausted and frazzled that they come across like weird lifeless robots and not people?

Kubrick has directed more masterpieces than any director in history, except for maybe Kurosawa. Whatever his method, it worked.

I have no idea what he's talking about, but I absolutely agree that most of Stanley Kubrick's films are utter garbage, such as A Clockwork Orange.

I understand the rationale behind Duvall's point, but it's also a somewhat hollow argument if he's having to dismiss the fact they were great movies. If consistently delivering great movies then the Director's methods are apparently working, because that's literally his objective

David Fincher put it correctly. You organise the location and everything. It's all there. Why wouldn't you want to utilise it as much as possible The only time a filmmaker can ask for this many takes is if they're on the level of Stanley Kubrick/Fincher. It's a luxury 4 da best
