Robert Eggers on THE NORTHMAN commentary: “I really hate this. Alex & Annie are really great & the music is lovely so I think it does work. But this first shot is like a bad ripoff of a moment in Andrei Rublev that pales in comparison so I’m ashamed...

I recommend the whole director’s commentary to The Northman. No one is more critical of their work than Robert Eggers, he’s too fucking funny.

Hot take: Eggers is being too hard on himself. Tarkovsky's shadow is long. Anyone making historical cinema wrestles with Andrei Rublev. The shot works.

Love how he blames nobody but himself.

Yeah lol I do disagree with him, I think it’s a cool little homage to Tarkovsky.

Yeah I don’t agree with him at all about the lack of the imagination or it not comparing

There is only one person who saw Andrei Rublev, saw that scene in The Northman, made the connection and then resented Robert Eggers for it... and that's Robert Eggers

No one hates Robert Eggers’ directing more than Robert Eggers

Even Ingmar Bergman considered himself inferior to Andrei Tarkovsky in trying to use the language of cinema.

My favorite part of that commentary is when he says the firewood looks too modern

Robert Eggers is a Tarkovsky fan?!? I’ve only seen The VVitch, but it makes sense.

@DumbassJamez It doesn't even feel like the same shot lmaoo.. why does he so ashamed about it. Then there is Tarantino who takes so proud on himself for ripping off from other movies

Nothing to be ashamed of, bit I know what he means. He doesn't add to it anything that would justify its inclusion.

🦊 the pictures that you saw actually got leaked, right? 🦊 it got leaked 🦊 i didn’t plan on showing you the pictures like that so when it first got leaked, honestly i felt really bad 🦊 me and the staff really thought so much about things like…we thought a lot about the release schedule and we made the release plan after literally putting our heart and soul into it 🦊 things like the news of me making a solo comeback, the date of the solo album and the pictures being leaked really disrupted our release plans 🦊 it made me feel really bad and uneasy 🦊 but this doesn’t really change the quality of my solo album and what i have to show so that’s really good, the songs are really good and the performances will be really good so this doesn’t cause a major disruption in that aspect but the main poster…the key visual of my album cover…if it hadn’t been disclosed like that, i was actually going to reveal it really late because i didn’t want you to look at those pictures and think…well looking at those pictures, you’ll think “is this yeonjun’s concept this time? is that the concept?” 🦊 i didn’t want to make you judge those things based on the pictures 🦊 like “he’s showing his body so is it a sexy concept? is it this concept?” how does i put this…i didn’t want people to judge it based on that 🦊 but anyway, i’m glad the fans liked it and it was good that it gained a lot of attention

🎥| “Well, for starters, it's not the first time I've heard a story like that, you know, of people kind of being inspired to work in the industry. Um, and I think that's really cool, you know. I've always been a big believer that the more fans that work in the music industry, the better for the music and the better for everyone, really. You know, they're definitely the most passionate people. Um, you know, especially the likes of like managements or record labels, these kind of opinions are vital. [Fan: We live it, like, quite literally.] Absolutely, absolutely, yeah. There's not really, you know, it's not about kind of guessing, it's, like you say, you guys kind of live that life. So, I think it's really, really important, it's really cool that it seems to be happening more and more, um, which I think is great. Um, in terms of the relationship with the fans, something I really, really cherish. it's a really funny thing, you know, when you've grown up together, but that ‘together’ to me is, you know, a decent chunk of people. It's a funny concept to me, really, in general. But I feel very, very lucky to have it, and I feel really—I think I've always felt quite protective over my fans as well, and I think... that is a nature of kind of growing up together, you know? I feel like we've got each other's back like that. [Fan: I feel like you have a unique relationship with your fans that is not common amongst artists today, so we really appreciate that, the effort you put in and the care.] I like to, yeah, I like to think so. I mean, I feel very, very blessed that wherever I am, you know, wherever I am, there's a certain kind of level of support and passion, you know? And that... there's a friend, exactly, that's lovely.” via Jesslyn Downey
