Day one of Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur is in the books, and a couple of small moments already say a lot about how meticulous he is. No matter how minor or major the situation, he coaches what the game presents. The first example came when he approached Dominic Solanke. During a small sided game, Solanke was using constant movement, checking runs and changing direction to create space. When play paused, De Zerbi stepped in to explain that in tight areas, locking/shielding the defender directly can actually create more space surrounding him to receive, without needing movement. COACHES: This clip should be a staple in all of our video libraries to show our players on one of the most important skills in hockey - recognizing where pressure is coming from when we get the puck. This is such a big time play from Carter Verhaeghe along the wall. He recognizes the pressure from the Carolina defender coming along his right shoulder, and shields the puck with his body while spinning off to protect and get possession. I can't emphasize enough how big of a play this was. If we can put our players in more scenarios in practice where they have to shoulder check, recognize pressure, protect the puck and make a play, it would be a huge add for our player development. The higher the level, the faster defenders close and the quicker you have to make plays. Understanding how to see where the pressure is from and learning how to make the play under that pressure helps players develop the hockey sense needed to play at those levels. Awesome, awesome job here from Verhaeghe and a great clip to show your teams.
