Remember when, I think it was McGwire, maybe it was someone else, hit some significant home run and when the fan who caught it said he’d sell it to the McGwire, McGwire accused the fan of holding hostage something that had nothing to do with him. Meaning the ball meant something to the player but not the fan. That’s insane. First of all, you don’t need the physical ball. Second you’ve got plenty of money, buy the ball if you really want it. Third, most importantly, without the fans there wouldn’t be stadiums, uniforms, broadcasts or any of the other things that we associate with baseball. It has everything to do with the fan.

My son played 4 years in the independent leagues for the Gary (IN) Railcats. One off-season a young woman wrote him about watching his games with her dad after his cancer made him too sick to travel to Chicago to watch the Cubs. So much more than a game for them.
