just curiosity asking but couldn't you make such an effect with a billboardgui?

You probably could, but I find particle emitters to be more flexible since they have additive blending (LightEmission)

I just realized what you were actually talking about... Yeah you could place a BillboardGui under a part, but it's not really realistic since it doesn't really act as a lens effect. Lens flares react to the viewing angle differently but a simple billboard can't do that

Additionally, you don't get occlusion with billboard guis. When you implement it like this you don't get weird flares showing up behind objects like you would with billboards

I won't be adding any further flare styles to the system for now but it sounds like something you could probably implement with the system.
