ROBOCOP turns 39 today. Paul Verhoeven read the script on vacation, called it garbage, and threw it away. His wife pulled it out of the trash and convinced him to read it again. He saw it as a dystopian retelling of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The screenplay of "Robocop" (1987) was offered to, and rejected by many big directors in Hollywood before Paul Verhoeven got hold of it. He received it while on holiday in France. After skimming through a few pages, Verhoeven thought it was "terrible and completely ridiculous." he threw it away and went for a swim. When he came back, he saw his wife was reading the script. He said to her, "Well, that's a piece of shit". She disagreed with him & replied, "I think you're wrong. Read it again because there are many possibilities here for you to do something different and interesting." And because of her, Verhoeven decided to read it again more carefully. Even though Verhoeven's English was good for a foreigner, it was a little difficult for him. So, he had a dictionary next to him and read the script. It was slow going for him as he didn't understand many words, yet ultimately he saw what his had seen and what she thought that he had the ability to do, half-action, almost half-comedy with it. He then called the studio head and agreed to have a meeting to finalise if he was to director the movie. The ticket was a $30 ticket and he made all of his money back. He walked over to customer service who took the ticket and claimed he scanned it and put a post it on the ticket and put it in the drawer. He then tries to hand the man $5 as the prize and claims that’s what the ticket says he won. The man know you can’t win $5 on a $30 high prize ticket. He asks the man to scan it again and he refuses and claims $5 is what it shows. The man escalates it further and asks for a manager. The customer service rep finally scans it again and it showed $300 and the man finally gets his money he won. Do you really believe the ticket scanned as a $5 winner or was the customer service rep trying to finesse him out of his money?
