Cern and I were about 13 minutes into our Cybercab ride when we had one of those “wait… there’s actually nobody driving” moments! No driver, no steering wheel, no pedals, not even a rear-view mirror. We were literally just passengers! We even changed our destination mid-ride through the Robotaxi app, and Cybercab just rerouted, turned around, and kept going like it was no big deal. I got in a Tesla Cybercab in Austin, hit record, and ate boba and popcorn chicken while the car handled the road.That’s the whole point. I did not have to watch traffic. I did not have to keep my hands free. I did not have to stay alert for the next light, lane change, or random driver. The Cybercab has no steering wheel and no pedals. There is no driver. There is no stranger sitting up front. So I could actually eat and just be in the car.This video is that ride. Doors close themselves. The cabin is already set how I like it. I slurp the boba, eat the popcorn chicken, look around, talk, film, and never once have to snap back to the road. That is the difference. In a normal car, eating is a split-attention thing. In this, the road is not my job.Once that clicks, the rest of it makes sense. You can open a laptop and work. You can take a call without saying “sorry, I’m driving.” You can recline and close your eyes. You can treat the cabin like a private room that happens to be moving. Productivity is not a pitch deck idea here. It is what happens when you stop spending the whole trip managing the street. If you have been waiting for a real Austin Cybercab ride instead of a staged walkaround, this is it. Messy food. No driver. No road stress.Riding a Cybercab without worrying about the road. His point is that Tesla has been talking with regulators and sharing data from day one. Cybercab was built specifically for autonomy, no steering wheel, no pedals, and Tesla’s position is that it doesn’t need the 2,500-vehicle exemption people keep talking about. Having no steering wheel or pedals in the Cybercab makes a much bigger difference than I expected. In a Waymo or even Model Y robotaxi, you’ve got a steering wheel turning and an empty driver’s seat you can’t sit in. It keeps reminding you that someone/something is missing. In the Cybercab, there’s no reminder that there should be a driver at all. They’ve taken all that stuff away, and you I felt much more relaxed, comfortable and safer. Also, the video-watching (ie., Youtube) experience in the Cybercab is something you just need to experience to understand. For 30 minutes, I almost forgot I was in a car… I think it’s the combination of no driver controls, the huge 22 inch screen, great sound system, spacious interior and being able to lean back and adjust the seats to whatever angle. You start to realize how much of a normal car is designed around the person driving. Once you remove that, the whole experience opens up.
