An absolute legend of gaming history turns 40 this year: Gunship by Microprose was released in 1986. For many, many years it remained the undisputed benchmark for helicopter combat simulations. It was universally praised for its graphics, weapons, sound, controls, realistic physics, and documentation (the famously long and historically accurate MicroProse manuals, this one was over 80 pages long). You fly an AH-64 Apache and can play endlessly in the career mode (no classic "end game scenario"), reaching a rank as high as Brigadier General. By the end of the 80s it had sold over half a million copies, making it one of MicroProse's most successful games of the decade.

In terms of immersion, it was one of LucasArts' best games ever and a milestone of 90s adventure games. It was highly praised by magazines but lost points for high difficulty, making it one of the era's toughest adventure games - and thus diverging from LucasArts' usual style which was usually on the easy/moderate level of difficulty. The large sprites, the amazing choice and composition of colours, the movie like vibe - I found this one to stand out and always wondered why unlike other advneture games this one never got a sequel.

Ecstatica is one of the first 3D survival horror games, and it was pretty advanced for its time. You can play as either a man or a woman, and it features great graphics, atmosphere, and cool mechanics, like the werewolf (not an ape!) stalking you through the town. It's very brutal and has a twisted sense of humor. Really good game.

Double Dragon (1987) – who was a fan? You play as brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, punching, kicking, and brawling through city slums, factories, and hideouts to rescue Billy's girlfriend Marian from the Black Warriors gang. 80s games didn't have the deepest and most complex of stories but let's be honest, who cared? To this day, one of the best beat 'em ups in co-op mode. The big character sprites, badass soundtrack, and the ability to pick up dropped weapons like baseball bats, whips, and knives made it an excellent game.

International Karate Plus (often just called IK+) was the sequel to the 1986 hit International Karate. Once again, Archer Maclean was behind another masterpiece from the golden era of 80s fighting games. The 1980s were easily the high point for karate and kung-fu style games, heavily influenced by popular martial arts movies of that decade. The three-player mode was an interesting twist on the standard 1v1 fights. It often led to hilarious 2v1 gang-ups when playing with friends. As always with Archer Maclean’s games, the music and graphics were excellent, the controls were tight, and the gameplay was simple but very addictive. I’m always torn between the original from 1986 and this sequel from 1988; I just can’t decide which is better. So, one point each - FIGHT!!

This game is literally "do you know ball" the video game. Developed by arcsys, this game laid the groundwork for what FighterZ would become, and even has a bunch of moves that would end up in FighterZ. The roster selection for the time felt perfect, and this was one of the first games you could play as Super Saiyan Blue Goku as he'd just been recently released in the movie. Extreme Butoden is something special, and I have very fond memories of playing it on a long road trip with my best friend. I highly recommend checking it out!

A dog had been confined in a very small, cramped, filthy iron cage for a long time. Its life was nothing but confinement, coldness, and deprivation. Some games from the 80s are hardwired into my brain. I hear two seconds of their soundtrack and I’m right there again. I see a screenshot and it instantly teleports me back. One of those is The Last Ninja, developed by System 3 and published in 1987. I was simply blown away by the graphics (isometric on the C64 with such an amazing level of detail - simply gorgeous) and mesmerized by the kickass sound. What Ben Daglish and Anthony Lees conjured up musically will forever be part of gaming history - an absolute iconic masterpiece. The game itself was pretty straightforward: a mix of action-adventure and a bit of puzzle-solving, nothing groundbreaking. But that didn’t matter, because very few games made you feel so immersed the way The Last Ninja did. Though a single-player game, it was often our choice when my friends and I met up after school to play, taking turns and seeing how far we could get together as a team. When you weren’t playing, you could just watch (and listen!), and it was an absolute joy. Which 80s game had a similar effect on you? One that totally blew you away.

It's better to burn out than to fade away... Wings (1990) was Cinemaware’s last game, and maybe their best. I know some people would pick Defender of the Crown or It Came from the Desert, but for me, Wings stood out with its great graphics, music, design, and overall feeling of immersion. The career mode and mission briefings felt like you were in an old war movie. It was also really tough, especially the dogfights. The sound effects when your plane was hit by bullets always let your heart sink a little. Cinemaware didn’t last very long, and I’ve always wondered why a studio that made so many good games couldn’t keep going. Sure, piracy was a big problem in the 80s and 90s, and that hurt everyone, not just them. Still, it’s a shame they only laste from 1986 to 1991.

You had to carefully judge enemy movement, shot trajectories, and your own positioning to avoid getting hit. For a game that’s soon approaching 50 years old, it was remarkably advanced for its time. It remains one of the most iconic games of early gaming history. Younger generations will probably never come across it - and if they did, they’d likely laugh at its primitive graphics. But for those of us who grew up with it, Combat was one of the best two-player experiences of its era.

Paul Schrader explains how 'Rolling Thunder'(1977) ended up being a fascist film: "'Rolling Thunder' (1977) was going to be my first film as a director. That film has an ironic history. I originally sold it to Larry Gordon at AIP, and then Larry moved from AIP to Columbia and took it with him, and then he left Columbia and took it to Twentieth Century Fox, made it there, and then Twentieth sold it back to AIP again and they released it. The story of 'Rolling Thunder' was really botched in the rewriting. The main character in the film was meant to be the same sort of character as Travis, with that same anti-social edge. The character, as I originally wrote him, was a Texas trash racist who had become a war hero without ever having fired a gun, and came home to confront the Texas Mexican community. All his racism from his childhood and Vietnam comes out, and at the ending of the film there’s an indiscriminate slaughter of Mexicans, meant as some kind of metaphor for American racism in Vietnam. In order to get it made at Twentieth, they insisted that that racist element be taken out, which is the equivalent of giving Travis Bickle a dog. Once you take out the perverse pathology of these characters, rather than become films about fascism they become fascist films, and that’s what happened to Rolling Thunder." ('Schrader on Schrader & other writings' edited by Kevin Jackson, 1990)

Castlevania, known in Japan as Akumajō Dracula, turns 40 this year. It was released in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System (or NES outside of Japan). I found this game to be both highly addictive, super tough and - at times - frustrating. What can't be denied is its cult status and longevity, with the latest title of the series (Haunted Castle Revisited) being published in 2024. A brilliant platformer, if you had the skills (which I didn't). Note: Video edit is the 1987 NES version, which came after the original 1986 Famicon debut.

You just had to be there for ‘W.I.T.C.H.’ — one or Jetix’s best shows ever. There’s a special bond for those of us who watched the series while it was on the air & collecting the comics. The TV show was unfortunately cancelled way too early, as it was handled poorly by Disney and it could have gone for at least another season, however the comics ran for 139 issues up until 2012. I’d argue it has aged better than its contemporaries and that it was ahead of its time. Did you have any of the magazine issues?

It featured rotary joysticks for 360-degree aiming, limited ammo, power-ups, and the super cool drivable tanks. I played it later on my C64, but the arcade version remains the benchmark. One of the best two-player co-op games of the 80s – always a blast with my brother. I don’t remember how many quarters it took, but maybe that’s for the best…

Its rumored that Sean Connery's character in the 1996 movie The Rock is actually an older, imprisoned version of James Bond. Matching age ranges, timelines, and skill sets help line up this theory. In The Rock, the FBI states that John Mason was a British operative jailed in Alcatraz in 1962 who escaped in 1963. 1962 is also the year of the movie Dr. No. In the 1963 sequel From Russia with Love, dialogue even mentions Bond was missing for months, possibly imprisoned before his escape. He was allegedly recaptured for good in 1971, the last year Connery was in an official Bond role. John Mason is a master escape artist, excels in weapons and hand to hand combat, and highly trained by British Intelligence. James Bond is just a code name and would explain why there are multiple people who go by James Bond, and why the Bonds use it so openly. Mason even uses exact dialogue from Connery's Bond era: "But of course you are" When Mason reunites with his estranged daughter in The Rock, it is revealed she was conceived during a one night stand, which would match Bond's history. Bond returned to the United States on a rogue mission to steal microfilm containing state secrets to use against the United States. His mission was a success and he hid the film in a church, but was then captured by U.S. authorities. Because the British government denied his existence, he was wiped from all records and locked away without trial. James Bond began a new era with a new agent, and John Mason ceased to exist.
