Reagan wasn't wrong, it's just that this can only work if there are no tariffs everywhere. In practice there are piece-meal tariffs everywhere, under different guises. Only the US truly believes in the spirit of free trade, everyone else took advantage of that.

Loved Reagan growing up. Have a coffee table book of the guy. I don’t blame him for starting global expansion and think there were benefits at first. But there’s not way he thought it would get to this point. And/or he was a great actor selling a bill of goods

That is correct. That is why Trump is trying to match everyone’s tariffs on America so everyone will lower their trade so we will have ACTUAL FREE TRADE.
