But recently in high winds, Heathrow Tower/Operations have continued-on with Southern Runway arrivals due to the ‘shed effect’ on arrivals into the northern, resulting in more TOGAs. These supersonic flows are six times faster than the rotation speed of the planet itself and significantly exceed the most powerful winds in our solar system. "We have never seen anything like this before," says Lisa Nortmann from the University of Göttingen. "Part of the planet's atmosphere is moving towards us at an enormous speed, while another part is moving away at the same speed. This indicates the existence of a supersonic jet stream around the planet's equator." For comparison: the fastest winds in our solar system were recorded on Neptune – "only" 2,000 kilometers per hour. WASP-127b is unique in other ways as well.
