Housing is out of reach, energy bills keep climbing, groceries cost more every month, and taxes never seem to go down. This didn’t happen by accident. Governor Maura Healey is doubling down on them anyway. “I’m not backing down,” she says, while pushing for more executive orders to lock in Massachusetts’ energy mix for the next 10 years. Solar. Wind. Geothermal. Battery storage. Demand response. All dictated from the top. Massachusetts residents are already paying some of the highest electricity prices in the country. Instead of reassessing what’s driving those costs, the response is more mandates, more targets, and more political stubbornness. This isn’t flexibility and this is not listening to people's needs. On your electric bill for February and March, 15% is being covered by the state. You don’t repay that on your utility bill. But State money is taxpayer money. That 15% is coming from funds collected from all of us through taxes. So, while you won’t see it added back to your electric bill later, it's still public money being used to offset high energy costs. The other portion? That’s deferred. You will pay that back over the following months, just without interest. For your gas bills in February and March, the entire 10% is deferred by the utility. You'll repay it spread out from May through October 2026 (when usage is lower). So, here’s the real breakdown: Part of it is a temporary payment shift. Part of it is taxpayer-funded assistance. None of it actually lowers the long-term cost of energy. And that’s the bigger issue. If energy prices remain high, are we solving the problem or just moving the numbers around? Senator Padilla should have found a better way to elevate his concerns to the Secretary of Homeland Security, rather than going in there and having that dust up. Having said that there were clearly people in that building that knew he was a U.S. Senator, so the minute he was removed from that situation in that briefing room, then they should have treated him with respect, and allowed him to disburse.
