RTI = RIGHT TO DENY INFORMATION? ▪️The RTI is under attack like never before - if the Modi govt has its way the Right To Information may well become the Right To Deny Information. Because it’s likely that you may no longer get the information you seek from your govt. Read on 👉How is RTI under attack? • Amendment of Section 8(1)(j) of RTI under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP Act), 2023 makes RTI redundant and ineffective 👉What has Modi done to dilute RTI? • Govt has amended Section 8(1) (j) of the RTI Act that pertains to Personal Information. The changed rule says that no personal information can be given under RTI • This is nothing more than broad denial of information under the guise of privacy 👉Why Furore Over DPDP Act Now? • Modi Govt had passed Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP Act) in 2023 when majority of opposition MPs were suspended • Govt had not notified rules so far and had put the changes for public consultation, the deadline for which ends today • If the govt undermines concerns from every sector quarter and notifies the rules then RTI becomes a toothless right with no good for people 👉Why is RTI important? • The Right to Information Act was revolutionary, it empowered citizens by giving them the right to seek answers & information • RTI also made governance transparent and govts more accountable - just how it should be in any democracy • RTI has time and again exposed massive corruption or lapses in policy execution • RTI has unravelled violation of rules and human rights • RTI made powerless citizens powerful 👉Did RTI really divulge personal information? • Absolutely NOT. In its original form, Section 8(1) (j) of the RTI Act 2005 clearly provided for withholding Personal Information which doesn’t pertain to a public activity or public interest or which amounts to invasion of privacy 👉So what kind of information can RTI now possibly deny? • Names and amount of billionaire wilful defaulters? • Wilful defaulters who have fled India? • How much loan has been waived off for the crony capitalists by banks? • How many work days have been given under MGNREGA? • How much grain has been distributed under PDS and to whom? • Whose names have been added or deleted from electoral rolls? • Income and assets of public representatives, bureaucrats and judges? • Beneficiaries of govt schemes? 👉Does Transparency compromise Privacy? • No. In a constitutional democracy like ours transparency and privacy are not mutually exclusive but they mutually coexist to ensure various fundamental rights 👉Citizens or Subjects? • The dilution of the RTI Act, 2005 under the DPDP Act, 2023 is a direct attack on both transparency and accountability which threatens the fundamental right to information. The EU recently targeted ordinary Iranians and other travelers by banning our airlines from Europe. It did so on the basis of the false and unfounded claim that Iran has delivered ballistic missiles to Russia for use in #Ukraine. Now, even President Zelensky himself has explicitly stated that no Iranian missiles have been delivered to Russia. High time for the EU to end this farce. The targeting of ordinary Iranians based on thin air is immoral and plain wrong. It must be immediately reversed.

The growth in the state since the Brexit referendum is eye-watering - funded through higher taxation. Therefore the question shouldn't be which taxes to raise next - it should be how do we trim the state & use that to stimulate business growth to bring the tax burden down.
