In a historical milestone, Hubble has spotted asteroids colliding ☄️ at the nearby star Fomalhaut. In 2008, scientists used Hubble to discover a candidate planet around Fomalhaut, an object called Fomalhaut b. While searching for Fomalhaut b in recent Hubble observations, scientists discovered it was actually a dust cloud masquerading as a planet – the result of colliding planetesimals. They were also surprised to find a second dust cloud! They had just witnessed a collision between massive objects. The Fomalhaut system seems to be in dynamical upheaval – a similar state to our own solar system in the first few hundred million years after formation.
