As it turns out, sometimes you CAN do that (kind of). After getting spun out entering pit road, Sterling Marlin was called for speeding on entry by NASCAR officials in the 2002 Las Vegas race. However, the official responsible for Marlin's pit did not hear the call in time to enforce the penalty, preventing Marlin from being held for 15 seconds. As the penalty for speeding on entry (15 seconds added to the end of the stop) was different than speeding on exit (return to pit road for a stop-and-go), NASCAR elected not to enforce their penalty against Marlin, allowing him to continue racing Tony Stewart for the lead - much to the chagrin of Stewart's car owner Joe Gibbs. Marlin would go on to earn his first win of the season, two weeks after getting out of his car under red cost him the Daytona 500. NASCAR then changed the rules the next week to make speeding either entering or exiting the pits a drive-through penalty.
