Every ship should have a small drone fleet. Since, thermal contrast between water and the surface drone is clearly visible on FLIR camera, some sort of object tracking should be easy to implement and input from operator reduced to a minimum.

Wow…the Main Directorate of Intelligence for the Ukrainian Armed Forces has released footage today showing an uncrewed surface vessel in the Black Sea, for the first time in history, using a surface-to-air missile to down a Su-30SM fighter aircraft with the Russian Naval Aviation. According to Russian channels, the shoot-down occurred yesterday roughly 30 miles to the west of Novorossiysk, with the drone believed to have utilized a variant of the R-73 air-to-air missile known as “Sea Dragon” to down the Su-30SM.

⚡️🇷🇺Archival footage of the destruction of a high-speed reconnaissance-strike unmanned kamikaze surface vessel (USV) Magura-V5 by the crew of a 4++ generation multirole fighter Su-30SM, using the 30 mm GSh-30-1 (“ГШ-30-1”) aircraft automatic cannon. The GSh-30-1 cannon was developed by specialists of the Instrument Design Bureau (Tula) under the leadership of V. P. Gryazev and A. G. Shipunov, and manufactured by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant. The engagement was carried out from a distance of approximately 900–1,300 meters, with a rate of fire of 1,800 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity of 875–900 m/s. At present, the Russian Navy (VMF) has fortunately completely abandoned this practice due to the critical threat posed by air-to-air missile variants R-73RMD-1/2 and AIM-9M, which can be mounted on unmanned surface vessels and guided against Russian naval aviation using thermal imaging systems synchronized with enemy combat control centers via command-and-telemetry data links installed using Starlink terminals.
