🚨 Rutgers professor and DSA member Eric Blanc kicks off a discussion with Jacobin's founding editor Bhaskar Sunkara and Labor Power Publications' Ramy Khalil by declaring that the Left “needs” a socialist presidential candidate in 2028. Blanc says that candidate could be AOC or “somebody else” and predicts that... planting a clear socialist flag could help DSA grow to as many as 500,000 members, rooted in a stronger labor movement. Sunkara says AOC could fill the role, but only if she maintains “distance and confrontation” with the Democratic Party and presents herself as an outsider. Otherwise, he argues, the Left may be better off with a labor-aligned outsider who has a less developed socialist program but is not perceived as part of the political class. Khalil, identifying himself as a Marxist, says elections are not the primary way to change society. “Social movements and revolutions” are. They cover a lot of ground, from the Democratic Party as an oppositional force, to a genuinely useful explainer of DSA’s factional caucuses for anyone unfamiliar with the DSA Left vs. DSA Right, to the cross-caucus consensus behind DSA’s platform and the internal debate over an AOC presidential run. “The Democrats exist as another wing of an imperialist apparatus to ensure the maintenance of capital and to ensure the maintenance of US empire.” Ray says socialist elected officials operating as Democrats should be “consistently agitating” through “maximalist political rhetoric and actions.” On AOC, he calls her “a political careerist” and says even “defund [the police]” amounts to “moderate demands if you’re a socialist.” Then there’s the potential nightmare scenario of AOC ending up as Jon Ossoff’s VP. Gray jokes about people who think it would “mean so much to America if Jon Ossoff had a VP that was AOC,” and Ray says that outcome would make him “die a little on the inside.” A lot of people claim to be experts on DSA. I always find it more useful to go directly to the source and just listen. This interview is a great example of a DSA primary source. Ray is an up-and-coming and increasingly influential figure within the organization, and you get a much better sense of its internal politics by hearing him explain them in his own words. The fact that he thinks Jacobin has drifted too far to the right may capture the political moment, and the entryism at work inside DSA, better than almost anything else in the interview.

Mamdani: "We’re not running away from the Democratic Party. We’re going back to what the party used to be. You think about FDR. You think about the New Deal. That’s what the Democratic Party once was. That’s what it could be again.” Mamdani is basically admitting here that he is not a socialist, but a social Democrat like FDR who believes in saving capitalism and rehabilitating the Democratic party. The purpose of the New Deal was not to bring about a socialist economy where workers own the means of production. The purpose of the New Deal was to save capitalism by throwing labor a few crumbs. As the material conditions of the working class continue to decline as a result of capitalism consolidating wealth into fewer and fewer hands, we are entering into a new period of revolutionary potential. Mamdani, AOC, and DSA are funneling this revolutionary energy right back into a Democratic party where it will be used not to bring about socialism, but to once again save capitalism from itself just like FDR did. This will ultimately lead to the working class being stuck inside this vicious system where labor is exploited to generate wealth for corporations and billionaires. A better world is certainly possible, but this requires the people to make a clean break from the two parties that exist to uphold capitalism.

But have you seen his friends? My mother used to tell me something: "Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future." I think that may be the single most reliable political instrument in the world. Bernie Sanders flew out to campaign for El-Sayed. AOC cut an ad for him. He headlined a DSA fundraiser and spent the final hours of his campaign at a pool party with Hasan Piker. That's an interesting choice of friends for someone who claims he's not a socialist. A candidate’s convictions tell you what he intends to do. Who he hangs out with tells you what he’s actually willing to do. When you campaign alongside people who claim America deserved 9/11 and that capitalism and the Constitution need to be replaced, you're showing voters exactly who you truly are.

Dave Smith’s DSA analysis is not good, which is shocking given how confidently he talks about it, the fact that he is a libertarian, and his ties to New York. He gets a few things right, but this is not high-level analysis of the socialist left. The most revealing part is that Dave seems unsure whether Zohran Mamdani is actually a democratic socialist or meaningfully connected to DSA. Zohran is one of DSA’s clearest success stories, someone recruited, trained, elevated, and elected through the movement. He is the poster boy for DSA and one of the clearest examples of DSA’s project to build power through the Democratic ballot line. Dave treats all of this like little-d little-s “democratic socialism,” as if these are just welfare liberals who are not really socialists and occasionally latch onto whatever issue is trending. But DSA is not randomly latching onto wokeism, Bernie, Gaza, Iran, or Lebanon. These positions flow from a worldview. When DSA “latches onto” something, whether it is anti-ICE activism, Gaza, or labor militancy, it is usually because the organization wants to operate inside the broader movement space and pull those fights into its socialist project. Libertarians should be the people most interested in getting this right. If your opponents are openly trying to put government, unions, and socialist institutions into every corner of economic and civic life while building a democratic socialist republic, you should probably know what they actually believe.

Goodwin said DSA’s electoral wins are “just one piece” of building the power needed to “transform people’s lives.” She laid out the next phase: freezing the rent, fighting for fast and free buses, moving from Zohran’s 2,000-childcare pilot to universal childcare, and using 2027 in Albany to tax the rich.
