The SaaSpocalypse narrative is starting to make less and less sense. Software companies like $PLTR, $NOW, and $CRM are getting punished because investors believe AI will replace SaaS. Jensen Huang disagrees. “Claude can write software.” That’s true. But Jensen argues that enterprises aren’t going to build their own software. They’re going to deploy AI agents that use software tools to get work done. “Agents won’t replace tools. Agents will use tools.” NVIDIA is already seeing this happen. According to Jensen, the company has deployed so many AI agents that tool usage is actually increasing. That’s the exact opposite of the SaaSpocalypse thesis.

Short every SaaS company on planet earth Today Cursor announced a REALLY sick feature that probably cost them millions of dollars to make Their AI agent records demo videos of itself after it builds things I gave the announcement to my OpenClaw. It built it out in 5 minutes. I pasted in the announcement to Henry. He said on it chief. 5 minutes later he not only built out the entire feature, but recorded a demo video of it too It's now implemented into our entire workflow. Now every time I ask my OpenClaw to build something, a demo video will be attached to every PR At this point how does any SaaS survive? You can take quite literally any feature they build, give it to your personal assistant, and it's built out in 5 minutes What moat is left? When I have superintelligence running locally on my mac studio, and it's able to build out any piece of software I can imagine in minutes, literally what value is left in any software company? This is the most exciting, frightening, awe inspiring time to ever be alive

Every day you hit your pre-AI plan, you're destroying value: "One of the big messages to these SaaS companies a few years ago was, get to AI or be worth 3x revenue. Those are your choices. Our whole careers we learned you lay out a plan, you execute against it relentlessly and violently and that's how you build equity value. That's what these CEOs learned pre-AI. Now, every day you hit that plan, you're destroying value. Another articulation of this is from my friend Anne Lee Skates. The CEOs who were going through this transitory period and had a business that was at hundreds of millions and they thought that they're all ready. They were working on their business from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and then trying to do AI from 5:00 to 8:00 in the evenings. What they needed to be doing was the inverse."

Gokul explains why outcome-based software companies like Zendesk are more exposed to AI than systems of record like NetSuite, and why public markets are not distinguishing between the two. He argues that the only way AI-native startups can disrupt systems of record is by spending 1-2 years building migration tools to get data off of incumbent platforms. "The software companies that should be the most worried right now is where they are pricing the product based on utility. Zendesk is a good example. Instead of paying for 50 Zendesk seats, you can pay for 20 and I can have 30 AI agents sitting next to Zendesk. For these companies you need to change your pricing model to be based on outcome. It's going to be hard for them to stay public. The companies that are less exposed are ones based on data that has been collected and captured over a period of time. ERP is a great example. There is no compelling reason for someone to put their career at stake by ripping out NetSuite. NetSuite has more time to build AI agents on top of it because they have the data, they can train the AI agent on top of it and bundle it. I think the public markets do not distinguish between these two types of companies."

He says, “The SaaS ecosystem has suffered from an excess amount of venture capital that came in. That venture capital has dried up now. Most of it is going towards AI, and that has impacted the SaaS ecosystem. So SaaS companies now have to make a profit- they were running at a loss, and that has caused layoffs and all of that. But then there is a second problem - not just the capital drying up. The second problem is that customers are exhausted. A bank cannot use 500 or 1,000 vendors. Wix at 1x ARR is not a SaaS bloodbath. It is a reckoning for businesses that were always just sales and marketing operations dressed up as software. 1. The client-server to SaaS shift was more disruptive than anything AI is doing to software right now. This is incremental. The market is finally pricing it that way. 2. SaaS was never that hard to spin up. When the moat is a sales team and a logo, the multiple compresses. That is not a surprise, that is gravity. 3. The companies that survive this are the ones with complex customer relationships and data sets that cannot be recreated. Wix does not have that. Base44 might not either. 4. Vibe coding tools doing $170M ARR getting priced at $2.1BN is the same mistake in reverse. Getting real workflow change adopted at scale takes longer than the ARR curve suggests. 5. The best software companies right now are not pure software companies. The ones with physical world integration and proprietary data loops are harder to replicate and harder to compress. 6. Everyone who raised at 20x ARR on a sales-led motion took on leverage they did not call leverage. It cuts just as hard on the way down. The bloodbath is not random. Some personal hot takes from AI: engineer Miami follows... 1. Software development is a dead-end profession because anyone can be a software developer now. 2. Anyone can use Cursor or any other tool and generate code. Being a coder and being a software engineer are different. 3. Computers used to be gated; now everyone has the power to make computers malleable. Everyone is a software developer now, but that does not mean they are software engineers 4. If you cannot demonstrate how a coding agent works, you are just a consumer and have imposed an artificial glass ceiling on your career as a software engineer. 5. If you are curious, you will have a job. If you have not been curious in the last two years, you are replaceable. 6. SaaS per-seat economics may become unstable as customers need fewer people to achieve results, prompting founders to think about new unit economics 7. Most companies will take two or three years (or more!) to figure out AI transformation. 8. Some companies are already building AI native teams of five to ten people who can build with the grain of AI 9. There will be an explosion in the number of software developers. Software development is now essentially free, and tokens are cheaper than humans 10. Not enough engineers know what it means to be a product engineer 11. JIRA ticket monkeys are cooked 12. If your company has banned AI, you should quit that company 13.
