If you don't know cursive you can't even read the original documents of our country, and they could also be changed and you'd never know it.

Or tell time, tie their shoes; The list goes on. 😑

And you notice the youngers do not have the callus on their middle finger first knuckle area like we did? I still have mine but not as thick as it used to be. I still write letters and cards but I don't write narratively like I used to. Charting used to take hours of time. The muscle memory is still there but the callus has thinned with the advent of computer keyboards.

Need to bring it back. Cursive is great brain training as well.

I used to have beautiful penmanship. But since majorly typing my adult life, when i try to write, it is chicken scratch. i think i lost my muslces in my fingers to write this well again. Really, And i have tried to do nice cursive, and again, my stupid finger muscles do not want to.

I agree it’s sad they don’t teach this anymore, but parents should!

Started homeschooling last year- began cursive right away- kids penmanship was atrocious. Have seen tremendous improvement!

@JakeCan72 My 6 year old grandson is learning to read and write cursive. He is home schooled. No way he would get that in public school.

my kids were born in the 1980's. I had this discussion with teachers in the 1990's. " Why do you not teach cursive writing anymore?" Their answer was "because it is not on their progress report". It is not considered necessary anymore. My question was why? I got no answer.

I actually tried to do it. I did ok, til I had to do the x!

This was mezmerizing to watch. Penmanship. A real lost art. They say your signature reveals your soul. What does that say about the youngest generation who can only text with two fingers…?

Yea, along with reading and arithmetic. But they sure as shit know the correct way to gender a trans person.

I could do that at one time. Once I got into computers 35 years ago, I lost the skill. Everything is typed and printed now. Even my signature has changed to be all but illegible. I can read it and know if it is my signature, but I doubt anyone else does.

@WyattCatarina Yeah. Really sad. But it is fun when you can write something to your grandchildren and it’s in code! Seriously though. If they can’t read cursive, they can’t read the Constitution of the United States of America. Get the picture?

@AllieJade1 My father-in-law is 93. You should see his penmanship, it's like its own font.

That’s like saying everyone should know how to take care of a horse, properly saddle a horse, and ride a horse. Cursive is old tech, not useful anymore. Therefore, it isn’t taught in schools. End of story. It isn’t sad at all.

I remember as a kid getting handwritten letters from my grandparents living overseas, completely illegible. My grandmother was born in 1912 she would have been forced to learn cursive her entire school life AND she studied biology at university AND was a code breaker during WWII. None of that generation wrote this clearly.
