Never seen that, but I say he's safe. He's holding the helmet, touching the bag with it. Doesn't matter that he took it off and is using it as extra reach. It's the same as a shortstop (or whatever position player) extending his reach with his glove to touch the bag before the baserunner.

Out. He isn’t wearing it. If he carried his bat to first and made it touch the base before the ball got there but the ball got there before his foot, he’d be out.
