Never seen that, but I say he's safe. He's holding the helmet, touching the bag with it. Doesn't matter that he took it off and is using it as extra reach. It's the same as a shortstop (or whatever position player) extending his reach with his glove to touch the bag before the baserunner.

Didn't know there were gray areas in the rules of baseball. After all these years thought they would have covered everything. Except strike zone, of course.

If a glove is an extension of the player, his helmet in his hand is the same.

Out. He isn’t wearing it. If he carried his bat to first and made it touch the base before the ball got there but the ball got there before his foot, he’d be out.
