Soon, the courts will be allowed to lock you up without any right to appeal.” “Without any kind of mandate, the government wants to do away with jury trials, and it wants to extend the powers of magistrates to sentence people for up to two years without any right to appeal, conviction or sentence. Right now, this Orwellian Labour government is quietly tearing up one of the last safety nets in British Justice, your right to automatic appeal. The Justice Secretary and mastermind champion, David Lammy, wants to make it harder to challenge convictions handed down by magistrates. The very courts where errors are most common. Under his plans, if you're convicted of an of an offence carrying under two years, your right to appeal is no longer automatic. It's conditional on a judge's opinion. And I'd argue, more often than not, judges also get it wrong. Just look, to free speech cases without jury as evidence for that, and it's also very important to remember that miscarriages of justice aren't rare. They're happening all the time”
