The reported midnight arrest of a nurse in Techiman in connection with the search for the person behind the “Ghana Jollof” social-media account raises serious questions that deserve clear answers. If there is credible evidence against anyone, let the appropriate security and judicial processes take their course. But suspicion must never replace evidence, and an arrest must never become a punishment before trial. We cannot normalise the practice of going to people’s homes in the middle of the night, taking them away and leaving their families uncertain about where they are being held or why they have been detained. Ghana is a constitutional democracy. Our security agencies must be strong enough to deal with genuine threats, but professional enough to respect the dignity, liberty and fundamental rights of every citizen. Hon. Minister, please ensure that intelligence-led operations are based on credible information and that every arrest and detention is conducted within the law. The security of the state and the protection of human rights are not supposed to be competing objectives. If the nurse has committed an offence, present the evidence and allow the law to take its course. If there is no lawful basis for her continued detention, she should be allowed to return to her family. This is not about protecting “Ghana Jollof” or anyone else from legitimate investigation. It is about ensuring that the state itself respects the law while enforcing the law. The way security institutions operate directly affects public confidence and the image of the government.
