A vibrating water flow creates a cool effect when captured with a 24 fps camera due to the rolling shutter. Changing the vibration frequency reveals different patterns

It never does that on my dinner plate

The phenomenon of salt vibrating at different frequencies is known as cymatics. This occurs when a surface, such as a metal plate, is covered in salt and subjected to specific sound frequencies. As the frequency changes, the salt arranges itself into intricate geometric patterns, revealing the vibration's standing wave structure. Apparently, this effect was first studied in detail by physicist Ernst Chladni in the 18th century, and the resulting patterns are often called Chladni figures. Modern experiments use tone generators, speakers, or violin bows to create these vibrations. The higher the frequency, the more complex the patterns become.
