To be fair, releasing the models openly was the company’s (deepseek’s) decision. It’s a bit different from the traditional open-source paradigm. It was a major effort by teams of engineers managed by one company, not a cumulative effort. The engineering part of it, not the research.

What did Ilya see? For a long time there was a rumor that Ilya and Sam Altman were fighting over the meaning and release of a huge new model - then called Q*. As we know, this led to the fall of Sam, his reinstatement and the departure of Ilya shortly afterwards. As Bloomberg and others reported at the time, there was even a letter from OpenAI employees warning about the new model. Listening to Noam Brown, there seems to be no doubt. The new model that scared everyone was today's o1. The real “aha!” moment came in October 2023, the moment they realized they had something completely new.

Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI co-founder, on why the company that builds AGI shouldn't be chasing infinite profits: Speaking on the No Priors podcast, Ilya Sutskever turns a question on the very technology he's working to build. "If you believe that the technology that we are building, AGI, could potentially be so capable as to do every single task that people do... does it mean that it might unemploy everyone? Well, I don't know, but it's not impossible." From that possibility, Ilya Sutskever draws a conclusion about how such a company should be structured: "And if that's the case, it makes sense. It will make a lot of sense if the company that builds such a technology would not be incentivized to make infinite profits." But he doesn't present this as a settled view. He immediately points to the force that complicates it — competition: "I don't know if it will literally play out this way because of competition in AI. Will June 26- July 4 be the EBS and the beginning of the 10 days of darkness? After all of these cryptic posts, many of us believe that it begins on June 24 and it ends on July 4 it just makes sense to do this right before we enter into a New World and we will all be relieved right before the jubilee. Of course this could be another tactic to throw people off, but it really seems like it to me and we’re not supposed to give dates I know that, but President Trump came right out and gave a date with the famous song Nessun Dorma.. Q and anons .. what say you?
