Look, you've gotta take 15% of your salary or any money you make cutting the lawn or whatever it is and you've got to invest it. What my mother did was never let more than 5% into any one stock and no more than 20% into any one sector. She didn't have ETFs back then. Now you can do this easily with an ETF, you can download an app. The key is have the discipline to save 15% from your average salary and if you start in your mid-20s and you have the discipline not to buy more crap you will be wealthy by the time you retire.

The respect of capital. If you want to be wealthy, you have to respect money. You have to understand where it fits in your life. And you have to understand that the way to get rich is not to spend it, to save it and let it grow. This is the key to success. I've been saying it for decades. You save twenty percent of your income in perpetuity, put it into the market, and you leave it alone. You start doing it in your late twenties, even if you just got the average salary, by the time you're sixty-five, you have one and a half to two million bucks. Stock market does that. You do it. But the reason most people can't is they don't have the discipline to save. They buy too much stuff they don't need.

Therefore, the incentive is for contractors to “never finish,” resulting in incredible waste. As an example, IRS modernization started in 1990 to be delivered in 1996. Today, the work is not complete and the contractors say it’s still 5 years away. 29 years behind schedule and ~$15b over budget. Everyone loses, except the government contractors. This must change. This week, the IRS froze ~$1.5B in modernization contracts, none of which have any effect on tax filings. All of those contracts will then either be cancelled or the contract terms will be changed to pay-for-performance.
