He was also a human being. BRET: But my point is, the men we admire get there through a route that punishes them for doing the wrong thing, for taking the shortcut, for being cowardly, whatever it is, and rewards them when they delay gratification and they invest in something and they tough it out and all of the things that turn you into a man. And if you create the developmental environment that does the inverse of this, you will get the inverse.

And it was really affecting me on set because I would really just worry about crying scenes, and worry and worry and worry. And, I would worry so much that I would almost like worry myself out of tears. I was lucky to be working with him on a film called, uh, The Current War. And I remember asking him like, "How did you do that? Did you draw from your own personal emotion or was it from, you know, is there a technique that you do?" And truth be told, it's a combination of both. But the technique that he told me was this kind of thing that he's able to do with his diaphragm, which is almost like laughing.
