What did Sam Altman mean by "the Gentle Singularity"? One of my community members asked, so here's my interpretation: First, the TLDR is "tech bro encounters Hofstadter's Law" (which states that everything takes longer than you think it should, even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law) Second, I think from the POV of someone who has launched startups at YC, the impact of AI is taking longer than he thinks it should. Businesses are slower on the uptake for a ton of reasons - technical complexity is often part of it. But also just tech debt and institutional inertia. Even when a massive company has a mandate from board of directors to modernize their tech stack, it takes a *minimum* of 18 months, often many years, to pull it off. Lots of moving parts. So the Singularity is only "gentle" insofar as it's slower and gentler than Sam Altman *expected* based on his personal tech experience as a SV insider.

This completely flips the narrative that AI is killing jobs. At the end of the day, AI is a productivity tool.
